OCZ Core Series SATA II 2.5Next to the development of multi-core CPU technology and the evolution of the GPU one of the technologies that is had a great impact on me personally was the development of Flash memory. What was it ... 4-5 years ago I had this 256MB flash-drive writing at 400KB/sec, that thing was the shit man.

Once the development reached a volume size of 1 GB, things really took off. 1, 2, 4, 8 and 32 GB flash drives are now common. Who does not have a flash-USB stick for example ? Exactly. One of the culprits of Flash memory often was related to the read/write speed. And thanks to controller combinations inside flash memories (think raid like solutions) last year we noticed the trend of Flashier-drives, Solid State Drives.

The alarmingly fast move of solid-state hard drives (SSD) for notebook, PCs and servers seems like a rather exciting development at first blush. Unlike their mechanical counterparts, which have spindle motors, rotating platters and read/write heads, the solid-state drives consist of flash memory chips and have no moving parts whatsoever. The benefits that these drivers offer compared to a mechanical drive are numerous.

The weakness however is that SSDs were intensely expensive. We are now in summer 2008, and never ever has a technology developed so fast in terms of speed and reliability versus the money you need to pay for it. And though value is a very relative thing, the first SSD drives, price wise, are finally competing with the fastest HDDs and are slowly moving onto a competitive level.

What better time to start a series of tests here on Guru3D.com ? OCZ Technology has the honor to be the first ever manufacturer to have one of their SSD drives tested here at Guru3D.com, and we have others in queue as well. Despite the negative spins from traditional HDD manufacturers and a couple of sour SSD manufacturers who do not have their technology right, let me state .. Solid State Drives are here to stay, and inevitably they will replace HDDs. And by saying that I do not mean in the next 3 years or so. But think of long term usage, this will be the faster technology, this will be a high-volume technology and it will be a reliable technology as there are no more moving parts inside that storage unit.

The product we test today from OCZ Technology is their all new and sexy SSD drive from the new CORE series. It comes with an SATA connector and really .. that's all we need to test it ;)

Next page please, for the formal introduction of the product we are testing.
