Introduction

Samsung T5 Portable SSD

We review the Samsung T5 Portable SSD. Currently among the more fast portable storage to date on USB 3.1, combined with the DNA of an SSD it can pass 500 MB/sec on both reads and writes - making this a rather fast storage unit. The unit makes use of the Samsungs latest 64-layer Vertically stacked (3D) NAND. Our sample has been equipped with a 500 GB volume size and if you are on the move, this dandy looking device might just be what the doctor ordered. With your data (secured) now accessible with a mobile APP as well, I should mention. The Samsung T5 Portable SSD external storage drive is among the thinner external HDD storage unit you will have seen to date. And hey now, it is compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 2 (that's USB Type C compatible) has a maximum bandwidth rate of 10 gbps (gigabits per second). That would be to 1250 MBps (megabytes per second), twenty times faster than USB 2.0 (aka Hi-Speed USB).

The unit is sized much like the older T1 and T3 models and has a to bottom metal design and rounded uni-body fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. The T5 comes in two distinct aluminum finishes - an alluring blue for 250 GB and 500 GB models, and a deep black for 1 TB and 2 TB models.  You can connect the T5 to an extensive range of devices from PCs, Macs, smart-phones and other devices. The included USB Type-C to C cable and USB Type-C to A cable give you seamless connectivity without the hassle of purchasing additional adapters.

  • Dimensions (W x H x D): 74 x 57.3 x 10.5 mm
  • Weight: 51 g
  • Transfer Speed: 540 MB/s
  • Warranty: 3 years

The drive also has a blie colored LED for indicating power and data transfer status. The storage solution as stated is based on the company’s fourth-generation 64-layer V-NAND flash memory and is lighter, stronger, and faster compared to last year’s T3. Thanks to them 64 layers of stacked cell-arrays (which has a storage density of 512Gb per die). The T5 offers optional password protection via robust AES 256-bit hardware encryption. You can set the password and manage the security mode through the Samsung Portable SSD Software which is available for computers (Windows and Mac OS) and Android devices through an app. The drive has sequential read/write speeds of up to 540 megabytes per second (MB/s) on that USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface. Interested already ? Well have a peek with the help of a photo first and then head on wards into the review.
