Sony has announced the termination of the integration of Twitter, known as "X" in previous branding, on PlayStation consoles effective November 13th.  With the cessation of this integration, users of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will lose the ability to post directly to Twitter or access the platform through their gaming consoles.

Sony has advised PlayStation users who are interested in sharing their gaming content on social media to explore other sharing functionalities that the consoles offer. The company, however, has not cited a specific reason for this change in service.

However, this move is reminiscent of Blizzard's decision to disengage Twitter integration from World of Warcraft, which could be attributed to recent modifications in Twitter's API structure. Earlier in the year, Twitter altered its API access policy, transitioning from a complimentary service to a paid subscription model with varying levels of access.

The newly introduced Basic access level, targeting non-commercial use or early-stage development projects, is priced at $100 monthly. For growing businesses, the Pro tier is available at a cost of $5,000 per month. Large-scale organizations like Sony would likely require the Enterprise tier, which customizes its pricing according to the extent and nature of the usage, starting at $42,000 monthly. These changes have significantly altered how companies can integrate Twitter functionality within their services.

As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles. This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so).
