Beginning in February, Plex users will have the option to rent or purchase TV series and movies. This development, reported by Janko Roettgers, a journalist known for covering streaming news on his Lowpass platform, comes as a significant expansion of Plex's services. According to sources including unappointed Plex board members, a majority of studios are prepared to contribute content, with expectations for more studios joining post-launch.

Roettgers' report indicates that this new feature should be available early in February. However, it remains unclear if this update will enhance the platform's existing free, ad-supported content, or if it will enable users to access these offerings without advertisements.

Almost five ago, Plex initially announced plans to integrate options for renting or purchasing films and TV series. Despite the announcement, progress was stalled due to technical challenges, as reported by TechCrunch. Among the issues faced were difficulties with digital rights management (DRM) and bugs in ancillary services. These challenges delayed the development of the rental and purchase store. Last year, Plex anticipated the launch of these services for the second quarter, but the timeline has since been adjusted to the current February release date.
