MSI is preparing a number of Z790-based motherboards featuring DDR4 RAM. MSI is preparing Z790 Edge DDR4, Z790 Tomahawk DDR4, and Z790 Pro DDR4 motherboards to combine Intel's newest chipset with DDR4 RAM.

These main boards will handle DDR4-5333+ memory modules in a single DIMM per channel configuration and DDR4-4400+ sticks in a dual DIMM per channel configuration.  MSI's Edge, Tomahawk, and Pro motherboards aren't exactly the company's flagship models. As a result, it begs the issue of whether they will be capable of extracting all of the juices from Intel's 13th Generation Core Raptor Lake CPUs in terms of overclocking. Unlocked Raptor Lake CPUs will have a 350W mode that enables extreme turbo rates, necessitating a superior voltage regulating module to send flawless power to the CPU and a complex cooling system for both the CPU and its VRM. Budget motherboards are excellent these days, although not as good as flagship ones with their costly VRMs and complex power circuitry cooling systems.

Using DDR4 with a brand-new Intel platform seems like an excellent idea, particularly if you have the high-end DDR4-5333+ modules. You will receive exceptional out-of-the-box performance with such RAM. However, with less expensive motherboards, you may be unable to use one of Raptor Lake's primary desktop capabilities fully; whether the trade-off is worthwhile is up to the individual.
