Microsoft has updated its Deprecated features for Windows client list to include WordPad, indicating that this long-standing word processing tool will not receive future updates and is slated for removal in an upcoming Windows release. The announcement, made without much fanfare, suggests users transition to Microsoft Word for handling rich text documents, such as .doc files, and to Windows Notepad for managing plain text files. The removal is anticipated to occur with the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26040, currently available through the Canary Channel.

In line with its focus on enhancing the user experience through artificial intelligence, Microsoft has introduced features like Voice Clarity to its operating system, which were previously exclusive to the Surface device lineup and no longer require specialized NPU hardware. Further details from the Preview Build 26040 notes reveal that both WordPad and the People apps will be absent following a clean OS installation. Future updates will remove WordPad during the upgrade process, with no option for reinstallation. Microsoft's decision to retire features has historically met with user pushback, notably the planned discontinuation of MS Paint, which was later reversed with promises of AI updates. Additionally, the recent Windows 11 previews have seen the removal of Cortana, succeeded by Windows Copilot, indicating a strategic pivot in Microsoft's development of personal productivity tools.
