CD Projekt RED reveals: Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC did cost $85 million

CD Projekt RED disclosed a financial outlay of over $85 million towards the development and promotion of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion. Of this sum, development operations claimed approximately $62.8 million, including partnerships with renowned actors Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves.



The remaining $21.7 million was channelled towards promotional activities such as trailer creation, influencer partnerships, and various marketing tactics. The expansion saw a collaborative effort from 3,600 contributors, with a core team of 360 primarily responsible for its development. Furthermore, the comprehensive spending for the entirety of Cyberpunk 2077, inclusive of the expansion's cost, tallied up to $316 million—highlighting a notable difference between the core game's budget and that of Phantom Liberty. During the production of the primary game released in 2020, the participation peaked at 5,200 individuals with 520 of them pivotal in the development phase.

Despite facing an initial tepid response, the significant financial commitment motivated CD Projekt RED to continue their endeavors. Following Phantom Liberty's launch, the company has set the wheels in motion for a sequel. Their newly-established US-based studio is in its foundational phase, aiming to consolidate a 350 to 500-member professional team to lead the forthcoming project.
