September 2022 marked the introduction of AMD's Ryzen 7000 series "Zen 4" processors. These initially saw a modest reception, primarily because of their exclusive DDR5 memory support, limiting flexibility compared to Intel's LGA1700 platform. However, the later introduction of the Ryzen 7000X3D series and the more accessible pricing of DDR5 memory in 2023 significantly bolstered the series' appeal. Consequently, the B650 chipset, tailored for Socket AM5, began to gain traction. This chipset supports PCIe Gen 4 graphics cards, including GeForce RTX 40-series and Radeon RX 7000 series, and features at least one Gen 5 NVMe slot. For users needing a Gen 5 x16 slot, the high-end B650E chipset is available.
By August 2023, B650 motherboard sales surpassed B550 models, reflecting a shift in consumer preference towards the Ryzen 7000 series and Socket AM5. Notably, even the A520 chipset outperformed its predecessor, the A320, by April 2023, indicating a growing interest in the Ryzen 7000 series despite initial reservations about platform costs. Meanwhile, Socket AM4 chipsets, including B550 and possibly B450, remained popular among consumers seeking cost-effective options with Ryzen 5000 series processors and DDR4 memory bundles.
The study also examines B650 motherboard sales by manufacturer. ASUS and MSI initially led sales but later saw a leveling trend, along with ASRock, in Q3. In contrast, GIGABYTE experienced a steady increase in sales during the latter part of the study. Furthermore, the analysis notes significant price reductions in B650 motherboards, with some models experiencing cuts of up to 29% over the study period. These reductions, alongside the declining costs of DDR5 memory and the competitive positioning of Ryzen 7000X3D processors, likely fueled the growing demand for B650 motherboards. In comparison, B550 motherboard prices saw a more modest reduction, potentially due to their initial affordability.
