In 3rd world countries 1 licence for Windows 7 Home costs the same as Windows 8.1 /100 euros/, while the average salary in a big city is less then 500 euros.
So who in their right mind will buy a legit MS OS /government excluded/?

Nuh,after the first year best sales marketing plan would be 69Eu to 99Eu max for upgrade in my opinion. Seems like they need to take back more consumers.

Romania: 110EUR for 8.1 Home.
8.1 Pro, non-OEM is 250.
Average salary is all over the place. The average salary is 400EUR, but there are fields that start at that salary. That's the minimum salary for a programmer (and there are a lot of companies offering even more).
But on average, same rates.

I got a bad feeling about all this free upgrade advertising.
Somehow i feel the downside will be, that they will fully bound OS to hardware. So you won't be able to activate Windows 10 as soon as you want switch to a new computer. Your "free" Windows 10 would not be portable to any new system. I hope i'm going to be wrong.

I think win xp 64 bit cost me £250, win7 "ultimate" cost me £100, win 8 was £20 using upgrade offer and now win10 is free.
At what point does Microsoft pay me to take their OS ?

maybe there next option will be they pay us to use

If Microsoft would just learn a vital lesson in which they brought down the price of their OS it would certainly help reduce piracy. An OS costing £50 would be worth the purchase for a large majority due to getting updates and not having to use dodgy scripts to bypass MS's copy protection but they continually charge an inflated fee that some people just can't justify.
Bring down the cost and you reduce your piracy is the key. I know there will always be the tight fisted "I hate Microsoft" brigade but a lower fee may just tempt them to put their hands in their pockets rather than run a dodgy script and having their bank accounts emptied overnight 🙂

I just hope we'll be able to download the Windows 10 ISO separately and use our legitimate Win7/8.x key to install it directly
Unless there's a catch Microsoft haven't told us about, the only thing making me hesitant to upgrade directly is that I'll have to format everything YET AGAIN.

I don't really see what the big deal is. They have to profit from this somehow, and everyone who intends to make the upgrade is a pretty huge % of active Windows users. Those who are incapable of doing the free upgrade (basically, anyone willingly using Internet Explorer 6/7/8 on Windows XP) likely have no interest in upgrading anyway, and PC sales just haven't been as high as they used to be. So, MS probably realized that if they perpetually let W10 be a free upgrade, they're not going to break even. Therefore, their source of profit will be people who were "too lazy" to do the switch soon enough.
Remember too - they have to pay to maintain the servers that everyone is downloading the upgrades from.
I'm not advocating for MS here; I personally greatly dislike the company, and especially Windows. I just think that this move makes sense when looking in their perspective.

So what happens if you want to reinstall Windows (Windows 7 in my case) with the free upgrade if your OS gets FUBARed in the future? do you have to buy Windows 10 then?
