Not normally the kind of person to bash a company at wanton, but I'm utterly surprised anyone still supports Intel's anti-consumer practices. Some of their outstanding complaints aren't even that difficult to fix, yet Intel consistently has turned a deaf ear to the consumer in leu of shady business practices. Not saying AMD doesn't have their flaws, but thank god for healthy competition.

Glad i went over to AMD, this really shocks me. Sounds like pure greed to me for customers to buy their new boards.

They should start selling Coffee Lake enabling kits. Could be a juicy profit opportunity 😀

Problem is, like with everything else in the world, we cry on a forum but do nothing about it in the real world.

Frankly, this doesn't--while there were valid reasons behind Intel's old Tick-Tock business model, I venture it largely to get consumers to cycle in new hardware. Now that they've broken their Tick-Tock pattern, they've had to come up with an artificial way for consumers to purchase new motherboards--a risky move that could blow up in their face if consumers cared enough.

Except vote with our wallets and not give in to shady business practices.

Pure greed !

The i3 is an underpowered model with only 4 cores. I would like to see them running an i7 8700K with and without OC on a Z170 and Z270. The previous generation motherboards could run the new CFLs mostly without issues but Z370 is supposed to have some little tweaks and pin layout changes to power 6/12 without stability issues. Ofc Intel is Intel and at this point we know about their greed but still I would like to see an 8700K with OC running on those without issues.

Every motherboard should support at least 2 generationso. There's no reason why it shouldn't as most releases when see a pattern: new tech, then improvement. I won't be buying Intel again for sure, specially knowing I can't even upgrade down the line just because of greed. At least if my 2500k blew I could get a 3000 or something.

I was hoping someone would go to the trouble of proving this out. As a z170 owner myself, I really hope more modders are experimenting in this direction. Maybe we'll even get an adapter or something out of it!

I wonder if this ended up being an economic wash for them. If you have to buy a new motherboard for a new CPU you might buy a cheaper CPU, might not upgrade at all or decide to examine the competition. Pre-built systems must account for such a big part of the pie that the lost revenue lost from enthusiasts is easily compensated for. Synthetic incompatibility, seems so dirty.

I can't say im that surprised, apart from being able to run with the older me firmware on an unsupported cpu, I assumed that would be alot harder to get working. , i'd imagine the next step would be to upgrade the me firmware , though that may be quite the challenge

That's the main reason I actually wanted to go for AMD in the first place. I had a choice between the 7700k and the 1800X, it's not even a contest from a future proofing standpoint; both because of the extra cores/raw power and because of the platform. Adding the occasional productivity workloads that I do means that I was lucky enough for the 1800X to be a better choice for me so I had no reason to go for Intel again. I'll avoid them when I can from now on, screw their practices.

A spoked person from ASUS already mentioned that Coffee lake support for Z170/270 was disabled as a requirement from Intel.
Did you mean a spooked person from Asus? ;)

It is shameful how the companies take advantage of their consumers by extracting the money without scruples.

I'd be stuck at the first step of the mod. How does one rewrite/modify a firmware

Pretty simple. All you have to do is insert coffee lake microcode into the bios.

I wish Intel's business practices was as good as their CPUs.
