It appears that it hasn't been done "to reduce costs" (it's just a side effect, although the part is said to not actually cost much anyway) and the original chip had a problem with the internal comparator used for fan speed and required an external comparator to work around the problem. The fixed chips don't require it anymore as their internals are working properly.

I'd rather the the silicon used in 4060 (Ti) and 4070, as an indication of a release in the near future.

Igor thinks it due to how Nvidia cut the 4090 die down to make this new die for the 4080. He suspects they chopped something in the design they should not have which is why the 4090 isnt getting a new version.

if i'm not mistaken, initial launch dies had a non-functional comparator so the task required a board side implementation, the new dies have this fixed so the board can have the circuit removed or fused off. these chips might even have slightly better voltage transients at the same asic quality.

They want to reduce costs? Then think about going back to the form factor that was used for earlier cards that used the same amount of power, or even less. 50% more expensive but 50% larger might sound like a way to promote the cards, but sales suggest it was an idiotic approach.

Reduce manufacturing cost to increases margin LOL what a joke once again Nvidia with the 4000 series. I hope this series flop tbh, Nvidia is too greedy.
