This one's a big "nope" unless you are extremely short of money and have to get a 4-bay Synology. The DS423+ will go rounds around the DS423 in both performance and software support/capabilities.

For each segment of the market, there is a product offered. Nothing wrong with it.

Well... a cheap x86 CPU would have been a better option IMHO. I know that the CPU used on the 423+ is already cheap, but I'm fairly certain that there are x86 that are dirty cheap and would avoid having to go the Realtek way.

Tell that to the manager and the project leader. They think in huge quantities of CPU bought in bulk from the manufacturer and if the cheapest of them all is able to cover basic stuff a NAS requires, anything above would not qualify. I agree with you, but that changes nothing.
