Halo belongs to Microsoft, the studio that works on Halo games now is 343 Industries.

They could had bought Konami, but it seems they only wanted to punch Microsoft

Kinda strange, considering Bungie is pretty much the only reason Xbox survived a single generation. It's not like MS depends on them anymore, but it must be kinda demoralizing for some of the other studios MS owns if they can just sell someone off like that, especially that that amount of money.

Bungie has been independent of Microsoft since 2007 -- Destiny is the only IP they have IIRC. Crazy to me that it's worth $3.6B though, especially after all the DLC controversy around it.

I can't see where that number comes from but 3.6 billion for just one IP is crazy. How many successful games must they release to even start getting that money back. Even an amazing new Destiny 3 comes out that is still just peanuts compared to 3.6B.

My experience with Bungie is just so-so. The used to do some Mac-only stuff years ago, and the stuff they did for x86/D3d/OpenGL was just "OK" I thought. Tried Destiny--didn't like it at all--but that's not fair because I'm not really into multiplayer. Sony must be getting the whole studio, developers, et al. Still a lot of money. But I thought Microsoft was nuts when they spent $2B on Minecraft, that Bizarro-World simulator...;) Sony is trying to counter Microsoft's sudden realization that gaming is where it's at these days--and not just console gaming, either. Computer gaming is very strong these days.

Sony has been releasing more games on PC that were playstation exclusive before, and they claim they intend to keep that going, so i doubt anything made by bungie will not be released on PC. Xbox, however, maybe.

Bungie have stated that they’ll be maintaining their independence even to the point of continuing to self publish and staying multi platform so I doubt much will change. Sony doesn’t really go after studios with the intention of buying up existing IPs, what they do offer is the funding to create things that studios might not have been in a position to do without that safety net.

Destiny is one of those games that I never played and never had the desire to. So I'm biased when I say that this sum surprises me, are there really enough players into its microtransactions setup to justify the billion dollars purchase?

If you chop up Destiny into segments, it becomes more than $3.6Bn very quickly. Movie rights Any songs/musical tracks All artwork The ability to deploy ANYTHING in the future with an established brand name reconition, lowering cost-to-market through a reduction in the cost of marketing, plus, the development cost of artwork ALL future revenue from IP So, if you imagine they could release an RTS for less money than what it would cost for a brand new AAA RTS game, you get the drift. I know Destiny is NOT an RTS at the moment, but it could be...just as it could be a MOBA...or, basically anything you want, and the cost is less in every way. No need for tonnes of artist drawing up concept art, it's done. No need for modular polygons in level design, it exists and is on the company servers already. No need to make new color swatches for photoshop, Max, Maya, game engines, zbrush, Houdini...blender; they are also on the company servers. They have basically got the nuts and bolts of everything they need to translate into any other type of game, or, media. Yet, I think they got the price for the company right - it's just so unexpected.

I said that many years ago when MS bought Minecraft for however many billions they paid for it. The difference is that Minecraft has a massive user base (which is an issue since if everyone already owns it who else is there to buy it) and a vast amount of attached IP and even then I can;t see how MS could ever recover the cash they invested in buying the rights. 3.6bill for Destiny, I am guessing Sony had a vast amount of money left in the 'Useless IP to purchase' ledger and have got to spend it before the new finical year or lose the cash in next year's budget.

With Minecraft i understand it because it still sells well even though it's so old and they have mobile now too. I doubt many are still buying Destiny 2 and even if they release more content/expansions i highly doubt many including myself will go back to it. I played about 60 hours of Destiny 2 and liked it but i soon got bored with it and preferred The Division 2 over it.

Pretty much this, I think it will also push that new Bungie game out sooner and better quality Destiny2 from now on. It's been a hit and miss since Beyond light, the biggest gripe was taken away them planets, but if they plan to release 2-3 more planets in the future with new stories, then I get it.
