Not sure how this is news really, since we had X370 then X470 it was logical the next iteration would be X570 and the other B550, as for Zen 2, well Rome was announced with PCe 4.0 and since their enterprise and desktop CPU's are based on the same architecture then it's also logical that Zen 2 would also have PCIe 4.0, that and since Zen only has 24 lanes, (16x or 8x8x) for the GPU then 4x for NvME/SATA express and the other 4x for the connectivity to the south bridge for USB, SATA, Audio etc. Then the increased bandwidth to the Chipset is much needed without the need to increase the lane count which would more likely increase the cost more than changing from PCIe 3 to PCIe 4, which also has the added benefit with PCIe 4.0 graphics cards of double it's bandwidth more so in crossfire which goes through the bus.

Since PCIe4 doubles the bandwidth, I dont think youll need x4 slots for m2 storage. Not for the general user anyway. I suppose you might get one on high end boards for bragging rights. It'll be dropped down to PCIe3 with all of todays m2 at any rate. If they do go over to PCIe4, theyll be at x2 for a while i'll bet. They could allow them to be split into two x2 slots as well. The big boon, will be to the chipset. That will gobble up the double bandwidth. Just hope they dont go overkill on the Sata, and give us some integrated 2.5/5GBps Networking.

I was hoping Ryzen 3 to be paired with DDR5 ... but by the looks of it it will still use ddr4 ... Kind of bad cuz first year with new DDR is always so god dam expensive and you feel like a test dummy . Expensive ram , new platform with lots of bugs/problems ... And my phenom II starts to show it's age. Games from mid-season 2018 I have to lower IQ settings .

IIRC 1st M.2 goes directly to CPU.

Yeah, one x4 to Chipset, and one x4 to m2. If m2 drives move rapidly to PCIe4 x2/x4 and then it will stay exactly the same, except the max speed of the drives will go up to 4GBytes/s roughly R+W. I suppose any motherboard manufacturer could bifurcate the x4 into two x2 slots for a dual m2 setup direct to cpu at 'lowly' 2GBytes/s R+W ?

I wonder if there's gonna be DDR5 support too. X570 could be first with PCIe 4 and DDR5 support should be in the next 6-12 months.

So if I understand this correctly, both Zen 2 and the 500 series chipsets will use PCIe 4.0? And if you were to use a Zen 1 or Zen+ CPU, your GPU and main M.2 slot would be gen 3.0?

I'm pretty sure no existing AM4 CPUs are compatible with DDR5, so I'm pretty sure that isn't going to happen. They'll likely create socket AM5 for DDR5 support.

^ Yes AM5 is for DDR5 as far as I understand it to, can't remember whether that'll be Zen 3 or 4 though (curse my rubbish memory!)

Also on the M.2 slot, I think they will increase the Pcie Nvme standard from 3.0 x4 to 3.0 x8 (Double Bandwidth) for future proofing, if required. Since Pcie 4.0 doubles the badwidth like previous generations, it would make sense to have Pcie 4.0 x4 for the SSDs. I have a Adata XPG 8200, and already, it seems to be under performing on Pcie 3.0 x2 Most I care about is not PCIe 4.0, but rather DDR5. __________________________________________________ Dear Lisa-chan, ... ...DDR5 or deal off!! I m happy with ddr4 controllers able to hit the top ddr4 available, like 4600Mhz. That would be a 40% bump in bandwidth and i do not think with first gen ddr5 you will get so much and improved ipc. If i can do that on my actual x470 the upgrade is worth

Correct on both accounts, if you plug a NvME PCIe 3.0 4x it will revert from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 3.0 so it retains compatibility. Also if we look at the current connection to the PCIe to the south bridge it runs at PCIe 3.0 but from that chipset devices like the 3rd 16x slot and the 1x slots run at gen 2.0 as the bandwidth is shared between the other devices and exceed with 4x lanes from the chipset so they had to drop down a generation in order to accommodate this. 2# DDR5, not sure if that will be available and from rumours not sure if it is Zen2 or Zen 3 but they may have two models, one with a DDR4 controller and the other with DDR5 controller, i am guessing it will be the latter as DDR5 may not be available till the end of 2019 and we know it's gonna be expensive with rubbish latency. It's not known if this will have a pin layout change or not as of yet. I would say it more than likely will to prevent people from butting a Zen with a DDR5 controller into a DDR4 based motherboard or vice versa.

Actually that's not quite what I was wondering: Zen 1 and Zen+ offer 20x total PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU (on AM4). The 300 and 400 series chipsets offer PCIe 2.0 lanes. I assume AMD is keeping the overall functionality the same across the AM4 platform, suggesting that Zen 2 is going to have 20x PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU, and the 500 series chipsets will likely mimic the 400 series except bump up to PCIe 4.0. So if that's all true, even if you were to use a PCIe 4.0 GPU, wouldn't that mean using a Zen 1 CPU in a 500 series chipset result in that GPU running in PCIe 3.0?

I figure the only way that'll be true is if they create an AM4+ socket and mimic the functionality they had in the Athlon/Phenom II days, where those CPUs had memory controllers for both DDR2 and DDR3. So, if Zen 2 or 3 ends up support DDR4 and 5, I wouldn't be surprised if it would be "AM4+ compatible" whereas Zen 1 and Zen+ won't be. Considering AMD's timeline though, I'm guessing they're just going to create socket AM5.

I'm guessing Zen 2 will use the same chip set as Zen 1 and Zen +. No change at all. Well, maybe they will change the look. Otherwise no change for the Motherboards other than price. Maybe Zen 3-4 will get the above options but no way AMD is going to jump on this that fast. To much to risk. Edit: I really hope i'm wrong.

Though DDR4 was "released" in 2014, it was not actually being used by PCs until 2015, so i'm not sure why you would expect that Zen 2 would support it, it likely won't support it till 2021 and move past AM4 as has been typically done (AM2 = DDR2, AM3 = DDR3, AM4 = DDR4)

Maaan, I'm still on good ole Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500k (4.5GHz), lol. All these TASTY upgrade options today... *heavy breathing* / *OM NOM NOM...* I am REALLY hoping to see better gaming performance with upcoming Ryzen 3, though. I'd be ALL over it, if so. I'm one of the few Sandy Bridge owners STILL "holding out," and bickering/nitpicking in the background, lol. Most Sandy Bridge owners who, "held out," were ALLLLLLL over Ryzen 1. But, even THEN -- as GOOD as Ryzen 1 was/is -- I still kept telling myself to "wait." And... here I am..

YES SIR!!!! I am on Sandybridge-e here my friend. 4.7GHZ holding strong on all twelve threads! As soon as something like this drops and is able to OC like my system now ill be upgrading. Nothing less than that of 44+ PCI-e lanes though. I never want to step down in any department when it comes to my current build. Kept thinking that if i had upgraded to intel like i wanted to I'd literally have had half of my PCI-e lanes and three times more things to plug into the mobo to use up said PCI-e lanes. Been holding out right there with you man. The struggle is real and you are not alone...!!

Too late... they should aim for a quicker release to capitalize off of Intel's issues. Q3 2019 is another loooong wait... Also, I'm not sure if people remember how expensive RAM are currently, adding another premium tag on top of it for new DDR5 won't help for Ryzen 3000's attractiveness I have to say. Is PCIe 3.0 actually at it's limit with current world, so that PCIe 4.0 is "needed"? I'd wish for more lanes before I'd need more bandwidth with the same number of lanes... but I guess that's just me.

I was on ivy bridge 3770k but when my mb died i just sold my ddr3 ram and 3770k and got a ryzen i was aiming to wait too, on the other hand if the gains are good and i can throw on my b350 a 3600 i will go for it !

I ran my 3770K from the time they were new till shortly after Coffee Lake released. Only did it really because my cousin offered to buy the motherboard, 3770K, and 32 GB of RAM (got it when 16 GB pairs were ~60 bucks). That covered a good chunk of getting the new mobo, RAM and 8700K so I figured what the hell. He put a GTX 1060 with the 3770K and its still handling the latest games like a champ.

yeah the demand for used z77 motherboards is pretty high around here 3 and 4 years old + used motherboards sell for equal or more than their original retail price that's why i did not even bother to dive in and find another motherboard the cost of a good z77 motherboard was covering my b350 motherboard cost + like 30% of the ryzen 5 1600 , selling my old ram and cpu ended up to have to pitch in about 100 extra euros to get new ram new mb and new cpu instead finding a used motherboard , for me was a no brainer ...still wished it could have lasted till the ryzen 2 (3xxx) series arrive but oh well i am still happy with it
