Its a shame they can't match the Samsung 16Gbps chips yet, would be better for all of us to have two vendors with the same speed configuration.

SK Hynix does have a 16gbs chip in the works, it will be released in the near future. As soon as production of the slower chips are done they will ramp up the 16gbs chip production. I wouldn't sneeze at the Hynix chips they have up to a 384bit bus speed. So a 8gb chip at 16gbs speed with 384 bit bus speed will put out 768gb of memory bandwidth with 12gb of vram at 1.35v. What's not to like?
Here is what next gen Nvidia cards could look like if they use Sk Hynix chips. Don't confuse GB with Gbps :] .
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GDDR5X 10.0 Gbps 256-bit 320 GB/s 2016
NVIDIA Next GPU With 256-bit bus GDDR6 12.0 Gbps 256-bit 384 GB/s 2018

AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 HBM2 1.9 Gbps 2048-bit 483 GB/s 2017
AMD Radeon R9 Fury X HBM1 1.0 Gbps 4096-bit 512 GB/s 2015
NVIDIA Next GPU With 256-bit bus GDDR6 16.0 Gbps 256-bit 512 GB/s 2018
NVIDIA Titan Xp GDDR5X 11.4 Gbps 384-bit 547 GB/s 2017

If AMD managed to make a refresh of Vega64 with higher clocks and HBM2 1.7 Gbps 3072-bit, it might still allow AMD to compete with Nvidia's third from the top next generation (not counting Titan). Assuming they could somehow combat price wise. But maybe AMD will instead concentrate on supplying miners with cards and forget gamers for the time being.
