This would be great if we could trust their reliability. 20TB is a LOT to lose or recover, I can think of better ways to use my time/money. I'll sit this out for some time...

Well you'd be a fool for only having one of these drives if you actually use that much disk space, and, if you don't want to risk losing anything. The average consumer can't afford 20TB of SSD storage, so, there's not much you can do to avoid the time consumption.

I get what you're tying to say but what is the wiser choice in this situation? Remember, these are consumer HDDs; they're not server drives. If you need 20TB of storage and don't have deep pockets, what do you do? Getting more+smaller HDDs is only increasing the chances of a failure and is still going to take a long time to recover from (especially if you're doing RAID, where you'll then have to rebuild the array).

Smaller drives with a proven track record are a lesser risk. There are a number of new technologies in these drives and Seagates record hasnt been the best either. I have a number of HGST enterprise drives and would like to use less. But that time isnt here yet.

We said the same every year. Even 20MB hard drive was a LOT to loose in it's time 😀 Jesus saves, God takes backup 😉

Year 2001 ... People where claiming that i can not ever fill my new 40gb hard drive , i knew i would ! Hehe 20tb for normal use are overkill today it will fill ...eventually!

Personally I don't believe going with SSD is the way to be protected. I had SSD that failed for me (Samsung 840 series) while never having drive fail on me (using only WD HDDs for over 20 years). That being said with such huge drives mirror raid (or some permutation like 1+0) is a must.

I remember going from a 5MB MFM HDD to a 20MB RLL HDD holding my breath! But all I wanted it to do was hold all # disks of Wing Commander to play in EGA. It was expensive but never failed me until I eventually got the IDE and 120MB HDD and VGA. Conner, I think it was.

(all RLL drives were MFM based, supposedly better quality to cope with the new compression) In those days we only had one set of recovery tools made by Norton and no recovery specialists, it was all so new. If Norton didnt get your data back ... Explanantion is for not so ancients techies 🙂

Had 144TB in 2010 (mostly in raid-6 with Areca 1880ix-24 with expander), now I'm just using 480GB optane and 4TB of m.2 ssd's in my main computer. Times has changed with 1 Gbit internet 😛 Haven't upgraded the storage space since 2014 🙄

I can imagine you guys backing up data with a chisel on marble plaques ! (Sorry i could not resist 😛) that said i am not that new my first pc was an inhell pentium @666(667 according to intel ) and a voodoo 3 with 64mb ram !

Well, the longer time it takes for your array to rebuild, the more chances there are of failure at the time of the array rebuild. So with larger and larger drives, you'll want more and more drives and backups to ensure that your data is safe.

It's funny, in a sad way, that the two remaining brands of HDD manufacturers are Seagate and WD... my two bottom picks when we had more choice in the market. :P

Luckily WD's HGST brand is still very good. Most likely produced in the same place as before 🙂
