Both i7 and i9 are 8/16? Intel is kind of a slow learner. You'd think they would take a hint and reserve i9 for something like 12 cores at this point. If the new architecture makes it impossible to have above 8 cores for some bizarre reason, then only release up to i7.

Why wouldn't the customers do strange things when the multi-billion corporation manufacturing the products does even stranger things? A single individual is at the mercy of his own limited vision, wisdom, and intellect, but a big corporation has thousands of smart employees, top of their profession, they have executives who ought to be know their own market inside out, they have a board of directors who know the larger world of business like the pockets of their own trousers. Yet the corporation can still do weird things.

Have currently Intel 10700 based system, looking at these specs, not even sure if worthwhile to upgrade to 11700 processor, no idea if my board will even support PCie 4.0 ((Gigabyte B460M_DS3H) As for the I9 Series, my thinking that made that series to try and compete against Ryzen 9 Series. Originally i wanted an I9 processor for my upgrade, but settled for I7 10700, as i was like is it worth spending on an I9

To many "series" of chips to many variants "jake of all trade master of none" comes to mind I still dont under standy why they made i9 series. they could just double core count on i7 and everything below it, if it wasnt for AMD and Ryzen Intel would still be trying give us 4c/8t and 4c or 2c cpu's Never mind endless security holes in there current architecture intel is using

One thing i really don´t like, besides the silly names, is the absurd amount of CPU´s with very little differences between them. Do we really need almost 20 different versions of CPUs?...

In the end its the performance that matters. Even if the released a 1 core 1hz CPU but it was faster in every application, it that that matters. I know its impossible and a theoretical scenario. But in the end it is the pratical performance that matters. So making a i9 is still very important if it means it is better than the best i7.

A lot of these don't really show up in the DIY market, they are for the OEMs to put into more specialized systems like AIO (All In One) boxes. This is especially true of things like the "T" series, which are lower power CPUs. The breadth of diversity in models with different characteristics to fit almost any OEM use case is one of Intel's strengths.

Uhhuh. 10 or 12 cores of Intel's new architecture would be faster than 8 cores of it. Why do you think CPUs have more cores? A hypothetical CPU doesn't run Crysis, you know, only an existing one does.

Faster in what? Faster cores with fast and low latency memory is still king in games.

Well, Intel doesn't share your view of Voriges and Nächstes since as soon as AMD released the first Ryzen, Intel threw the fresh Kaby Lake to the wolves and released Coffee Lake with more cores. And then the next gen with even more cores. And then the next with more cores. Only now Intel suddenly reduced the number of cores. I doubt it's because they really wanted to do it, but technical factors forced them to. And no, if you only ever play games, I don't think you need currently need more than 8C/16T. Surprisingly enough, people occasionally also do other things than play games with their PCs. Even Intel hasn't forgotten that, even if they presently have a hard time competing with AMD on that heavy user market. Have you forgotten it?
