That works out at £340 over here, cheapest I can find is £462, just shows how much we get ripped off!
Corrupt^

So it's another marketing 'gimmick' then, of no use except in benchmarks?
The whitepaper also says it only uses 25% of installed DRAM up to a maximum of 1GB RAM, so why are you seeing 2GB, unless that's changed? It also only seems to be of benefit to people who use the same programs consistently as they will already be cached, if you run a variety of programs it might not be worth it!

lucky me got it at $549 this morning, amazon changed the price back to $599 now, though still cheaper than the others.

Still miles cheaper than the UK!

the 840 pro can be found at amazingly good prices now like 220 for 512GB 840 pro. The speed difference between the 840 pro and 850 pro is so minor it's not worth paying more. There really is no point to invest in an expensive sata III drive. There is no room to grow on that interface and even the mid range drives are basically maxing it out. The drive worth spending your money on will be the samsung sm951 pci-e 3.0 x4 nvme ssd coming out in 128,256,512 and 1TB. Spending high on the 850 pro is a mistake when next year the pci-e 3.0 x4 interface ssd's start hittin the shelves it will make the 850 pro look like crap and be priced about the same.
In my opinion the best price/performance ratio SSD to buy now if you absolutely cant wait for the pci-e ssd's is the crucial m550 1TB for around 429.99. The performance of all sata III ssd's are so close you are better off just getting a cheaper one. There are really only 3 manufacturers worth considering. Crucial, Samsung and intel. These are the only 3 companies that actually control every single part of the SSD. The nand, controller, firmware, dram cache. All other companies are just repackaging other peoples products and your product just doesn't work as well when you don't control all the pieces that make it.

So if people had the choice between getting a 1tb 840 evo and a 500gb 850 pro what would you pick? I want one for games but I'm not sure how much better the 850 is.
I'm not paying £500+ for a 1tb SSD!
BarryB
If they did an 840 PRO in 1TB I'd have that, but they don't, only the EVO!
My 2 x 1TB HDDs I use for storage are over 6 years old and no reason to replace them yet, but i'd like a 1TB SSD to put all my games on, have over 500GB of steam games on one of the HDDs so moving them to an SSD would be much better. I can then use my existing 512GB SSD I use for non-steam games to replace the 256GB SSD I use as a system drive. But, like you, around £450 for the PRO 1TB SSD is a bit too much!

Good luck with the prices on pci-e ssd. The performance is there with a pricetag to match. Think we got a long while for affordable pci-e ssd.

I'm praying Samsung will release a new M.2 drive with the 850 PRO architecture. now that would be one serious beast!
BarryB
My Z87 has no M.2 connector :bawl:
Just realised you can get M.2 cards that fit in PCI-E slots, silly me 🙂
