Nice review Boss!....that little thing got some kick! I remember back when I bought my first i3 (Sandy Bridge $89) and it was faster than a Core 2 quad that cost $500... Good to see that there are budget choices for PC Gamers nowadays....

I think he's asking because the 3600 didn't have a locked multiplier. Looking at the specsheet on AMDs website though, it does say the 5600 is unlocked

I dunno this gets to the price point where one would say a DDR4 12400 would be the only smart choice so you'd only buy this if you really want an upgrade to some Zen 1 or 2 chip that has the same or less cores.

It's unlocked. I bought one a month ago, right after launch, and my MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon motherboard's BIOS has the option to change the base clock multiplier enabled. I left it alone though and instead used the option to override the maximum boost frequency up to 200 MHz. Mine is running undervolted (minus 0.1 V offset) with a 200 MHz boost override and ALL cores stay boosted at ~4.55-4.65 GHz during a multithreaded WinRAR benchmark or CINEBENCH run. It's also Prime95 stable (at least for the 6 hours I left it running), but then the cores "only" stay boosted at ~4.35-4.45 GHz because of the heavier load. I'm very impressed with this chip.

I have Ryzen 1600 in my MSI B350 board since 2017. After years of claims there will be no support for 3000 and 5000 there is finally new bios available and I already picked 5600G for 143 EUR new with tax (Italy). 5600X is 200 Euro now, 5600 should be 150 Euro soon I think. All good prices for everyone with old boards and I really dig the support AM4 socket is having all these years!

Can you please explain how your results show the 5600x has 4% faster IPC than the 5600 when both are locked to 3500MHz? Same cache, same clock speed, same architecture. Am I missing something here?

Really would like to understand why the article claims that "non-x" ryzen 5000 chips can't be overclocked.... As far as I'm aware it's ALWAYS been with ryzen that you can overclock ANY of their cpu's as long as you had a motherboard that supported it (aka x and b series of each generation). Am I missing something I even Google it and find plenty of people confirming this especially back when they were new and people weren't really aware of how they were different from Intel (who does lock oc to their "k series" cpu's). Unless something changed much later in the generations lifetime that isn't as well documented then this chip and any other ryzen should be fine to oc if you got the capable motherboard.

I use the 5600X on X570 without OC and this beast gives me on all my games stable 75Hz of my monitor. Given not all my games are the newest available on my mere 1660Super, but still. This beast is tied down heavily by my GPU. I assume it could easily show the potential of 3080. On newest games, I simply play on High and one or two features I don't particularly need on Medium and still get my stable 75Hz. Now priority have my new Speakers I ordered with Optical connection since my M/B has at least the best Realtek ALC1220. Next my new monitor on 1440p 144Hz slightly curved and last my 4060Ti and I'll be set for the next 3-4 years with an extremely "budgety" PC. Not to mention on my 1080p monitor I can disable Presicion boost and still get the same results. Even if I keep it on 3700Mhz.

I use a 5600x with a 6800xt @ 3840x1080 144hz, and this little 6 core flies. It feeds the 6800xt very well. When not gpu bound in fps, it pushes fps 144+.

Neither of those CPUs is locked. Also, at stock settings, the 5600X has a 3.7 GHz base clock and a 4.6 GHz boost clock, while the 5600 has 3.5 GHz / 4.4 GHz respectively. https://www.amd.com/en/processors/ryzen

Oh, I see what you meant now. I confess that I stopped reading when he said that the 5600's multiplier was locked. You're right, the 5600X scoring 4% higher looks weird. Maybe it's something specific to the 2 samples he used to test.

Why no overclocking testing? This CPU can and should be overclocked.
