I lived long enough to see the 3D gimmick removed from TVs, will I see 7.1 removed from headphones in my time?

Why would you want that? Properly emulated 7.1 can really have good sound positioning against typical stereo headsets.

Because it's two speakers, not 8.

It doesn't matter. By using a combination of reverb and volume you can trick the brain that it listens to a 7.1 system. And the separation of front, rear and side speakers is great on a properly done headset, using only two drivers.

Spending money on 7.1 headsets is a waste. You need 8 speakers and separation, otherwise it's just a gimmick. RGB's that you can't even see is just another gimmick, and for those who can see you, you just look like a douche.

There is no separation in a headset when you cram inside it so many speakers near your ear. You have to try both versions and then give a conclusion, otherwise are just preconceived ideas. The market is moving towards 7.1 emulated sound headsets, for a reason.
