Unless you have media that really takes advantage of a screen like this, it is awful. Our eyes ARE able to look up and down, y'know. I personally am using a dual monitor setup at work where the monitors are stacked vertically, because I personally find it more productive. I also get quicker navigation with the mouse this way. Doing something productive on this Philips monitor seems like a nightmare to me - long mouse travel distances, things are forced out-of-view, takes up a lot of desk space, and window management becomes a burden. A dual monitor setup (horizontal or vertical) is more practical for productive purposes. I just don't think this monitor has a "surrounding" view for media either. The screen is so wide that either your vertical view is limited, or, your horizontal view will end up being so wide that you can't see both sides of it. That doesn't sound like an ideal experience to me. This monitor is probably great for racing games and a very very small percentage of movies. That's about it. I do have to say though, that this is a very good in-between option for those who want something wider than 1 monitor but don't want to deal with bezels, or don't have the money for 3 monitors.

Probably suffers from the same back light bleed lottery that all the monitors using this LG panel do.

I want something like this, but with added G-sync, 1ms and 120Hz. I think by the end of this year we should have it.
Yes, exactly! Once you go 120hz+ there's really no going back. I don't even care if it's IPS or not - as long as the response time is 1-2ms. Although, for ultrawide I would definitely want a curved display.

What's all this nonsense? If you don't see the benefit of an ultra-wide monitor then perhaps IT'S NOT FOR YOU. You're welcome to your opinion, of course, but don't say it's useless or awful just because it doesn't fit into YOUR productivity pipeline or lifestyle. People like you really get on my nerves. How egocentric and ignorant does one have to be to call something 'awful' just because they can't find a use for a highly-specific tool. It's insane, and it's all the more scary because you seem like an otherwise rational human being. Those are the kind of 'smart' people that plan a murder down to the finest details.

I didn't say it was entirely useless, I'm just saying it has a very limited use and isn't very practical for most purposes. If you actually read what I said you'd realize it isn't nonsense. I'm using linux, so actually a lot of what I said doesn't even have to apply to me; Linux's window and task management is (or can be) fantastic and take care of some of this monitor's cons. But if you're so sure I'm wrong - how about you elaborate on why this monitor is superior compared to a dual-monitor setup for productive purposes? Think about it, the following monitor arrangements are common or mass production: * There are monitors that reach beyond 60" * Dual-monitor setups are so common that it's hard to find a GPU that has only 1 display connector. * There are 4K monitors at screen sizes so small that your eye can't identify individual pixels. * There are monitors with refresh rates so high your brain can't process individual frames. * There are HD projectors But ultra-wide? They're rare, and the idea is pretty old. If they were so useful, they'd have taken off by now. Form factor has nothing to do with it either, because software has easily adapted from 4:3 (or 5:4) monitors to 16:10 and 16:9 at a time when scalable graphics wasn't really a thing. As for gaming, that's a no-brainer - you get a wider view with no bezels, and if it suits your gaming needs then great. For most games, 16:9 gives you a greater advantage.

I used "awful" because someone else did, but I guess awful is a bit of an over-statement; this monitor isn't THAT dumb. I work with databases and robots on a daily basis - it's in my instinct to not see things get made simply "because we can", and to get the highest efficiency possible. This monitor has it's purposes but in most cases, it is inferior to other display arrangements.
