I still have somewhere a 5-year-old 60gig SSD. It's quietly crying in a corner.

175gb thats 34% of my 512gb ssd.... bloody hell

No problem with cheap ssd's and 500Mbit internet πŸ™‚ Cheaper and bigger storage is out every year. Can't see the "problem" Thank god the world is going forward. I don't miss floppydrive...

I'd be really curious to know what actually makes up that data. Textures? Levels? DRM? πŸ˜€ Also, how does this fare with a console? Where you have 500GB space, 1TB maybe, and you can install maybe two or three games besides this? That's... well... πŸ˜€

Hitman 2 150gb.

1) Textures 2) Textures 3) Textures 4) Animation data ? The more uniquely textured item you have, with the higher their respective resolutions, the more space it'll take. With Photogrammetry getting involved you end up with more and more object using their own set of textures that artists didn't have to create (and couldn't pack together and re-use on several 3D object as they are object specific). For instance, while you could create a wonderful 3D 'in-construction wood' house model in the modeling software of your choice, and then 'texture it' by creating a tileable wood material and apply it on the whole house, you could also use photogrammetry on real world wood beams and floor assets from a construction site, which would all be unique with a level of detail you would have spent countless hours to reach if you were to model, but by being unique and not procedural tileable assets they'll take much more texture space/data.

Then we need better compression algorythms. Or bigger discs for cheaper prices. No wonder they're going for 1TB SSDs like it's the first GB HDD back in the day, everybody needs one. πŸ˜€

I added 4) Animation data ? To the list ^^. But indeed compression is a never ending active research field ! Over the last couple of iteration of Unreal Engine there's been a bunch of animation compression improvements which were really noticeable in both disk space taken and original animation data fidelity.

This is getting out of hand, they should make an add-on pack for 4k textures: I bet those are at least half the game size.

Added something to your list there πŸ˜›

Gone are the days where you say, I'll play this game now after a 30 minute download. Now it's more like , I'll play this game next week! πŸ˜€

It would take me 175 hours to download on my shitty home connection :'(

SSD prices keep going down, this will be the average size of games in 2 or 3 years

This game is not my cup of tea, but I am curious to see how it looks.

50 minutes download with 500Mbit. Fast enough πŸ™‚

They should hire FitGirl to do the repacks for them. Hitman 2 - 136gb compressed to 26gb GTA V - 70gb to 35gb Mad Max - 30gb to 4gb (!!!!) Ghostbuster - 22gb to 5gb Gears 5 - 65 to 31gb So basically 50% size is a standard, with exceptions of 10% size etc. Extraction times are now like 30minutes on huge releases. Plus you have the extra convenient ways to save your precious SSD space? Dont like 10 other languages if you will use just english. No problem. Dont like that 10minute long HD 60fps credits video? Hmm. Not interrested in the multiplayer part? Ok. Or just download 150gb...

And I thought Doom 2016 was a huge game at like 70-80gb. This takes the cake.

Damn, are they developing with NodeJS or something? The size of node modules are getting out of hand.

Yep... the amount of times i have fired up Origin to have a quick blast of Battlefield or Starwars Battlefront and it tells me both games have updates that MUST be installed first and each one is at least 60GB and will take an hour at least.
