I'd like to reach a minimum of 1440p DSR/60fps with Ultra settings in games like Witcher 3 and Far Cry Primal (and 1620p DSR/60fps in less demanding games) but my overclocked 980 can't manage it without nerfing a few settings like Shadows. The 1080 is out of my price range in the near future. Looking at the 1070 compared to the 980 it has double the Vram, higher clock and memory speeds, higher bandwidth, higher TFLOPS but lower Cuda Cores and TMUs. But I have not idea how that translates to performance. Given that I should be able to recoup the cost of the 1070 selling my 980 on ebay would it be worth upgrading to the MSI Gaming 1070? Or should I hope that I can save enough money by the end of the year to get the 1080 instead?

Probably wait for the 1080 later in the year (price drop with Ti release). Perhaps AMD pulls a rabbit out of their hat with a kickass GPU in the meantime. A 1070 would likely be underwhelming in your case.

videocardz has leaked benches for the 1070. About same on 1080p but pulls ahead on 1440 and about 5% faster on 4k than TitanX in firestrike. Cant link to them on G3D. *fwiw* since that site does not hold much cred with many. But wouldnt be surprised if accurate, since its in keeping with GTX '70 cards typical performance vs last gen flagships.

If that core clock is real it is around 1860mhz. So it would be 7.1tflops. Tad faster then Titan X and 980 ti. Once all of them are overclocked I would see 1070 being left behind.

weird. TitanX and 980ti are closer to the 1070 at 1080p than they are at 1440p and 4k. I was expecting the 1070 maybe be on par with TitanX and 980ti and then lose at 1440p and 4k. Even if these results are correct, I'm glad I bought the 980ti only a few days ago. BTW, 17.xk for 1070, TitanX and 980ti in Fire Strike. Overclocked 980ti are hitting near that 1080 score (21.xk). I guess the winner will be the one that overclocks best. I somehow doubt that a 1070 will reach 1080 stock performance with all the cuts in the chip. But you never know. EDIT: Just saw that the 1070 was running 1860 to 1870 on the core. No way in hell will it reach stock 1080 performance. Even if you overclocked it by another 200mhz to 2060mhz, that will not make up for the lack of 640 CUDA cores, 40 texture units and the slower vram. Looks like the 980ti and TitanX will be above the 1070. Still, if the price is right, these will sale like crazy.

My factory OC stock boost 1342MHz got ~ 19.5k.. So if it gets ~4500 Ultra 4K at Max OC, then it won't come close either, I get ~4950 Ultra 4K and moderate OC 1470Mhz.. Guess that 1070 is what it is, at 450-550€ which Im quite sure it will be, its a bit of a bust.. Ok its just enough to fill the gap between 980gtx and 980Ti.. nvm 1080gtx 790€, imo they frickin lost their minds with pricing this time around, at least here in EU :bang: 😀 Now I really wonder about 1080Ti full pascal chip.. 850€+ for sure.. Even 980Ti wasn't that high, most stopped ~ 750€, usually 690-730€.

Any chance the 1070 and 1080 prices drop when the 1080Ti is released?

here you can find out what price drops you can expect in general after a certain period of time. https://pcpartpicker.com/trends/price/video-card/ for example 980 started selling (best price! not mrsp) slightly below 600$ and after pretty much exactly 6 months there is a drop by 50$ and then no further drop basically... just some small "background noise"... if you're going second hand though, thats another thing. but dont expect too much either. ebay has become a real battlefield of prices in 2nd hand GPU. so best is to buy off friends/acquaintances

Was thinking that 1070 should go higher then 1080 in clocks maybe. But not much and still lose to a 1500 980 ti. :D my take on it. I will know soon enough.
