This is what it should have been from the beginning. The current process is not that friendly for simple users nor very clear on how it works plus the problems on many ppl who can't upgrade from the notification tray because of errors. This also ensures a fresh clean install without the errors of the simple upgrade which works but kinda messes the files. Better late than never.

They did the same with Win 8.1, 8 keys didn't work for install for a long time after 8.1 arrived, they do now

Thank god! This is going to save so much headaches during repairs and cloning 😀

Yea, I got a laptop to repair a couple weeks back, and it had an unfixable unbootable 7 on it, tried every trick to get it to boot without any luck, really could not be bothered installing 7 then upgrading to 10, then clean installing 10, so KMS'd it with 10 instead
This will make things a lot easier

Yeah, had some serious headaches, especially since my first Rampage V mobo DOA (it would boot, but only after forced shutdowns and cold boots...) and had to changed, so I had to go through this twice. :bang:

Finally! Why didn't they do this to being with?
Now the only question I have is will this still work after that free year is up?

The product key and version of Windows 10 you are installing must match based on this matrix. Basically it means Home to Home; Pro to Pro etc.
A product key for Windows 8.1 Home can not be used to activate a Windows 10 Professional installation.
On older machines that do not have the OEM product key embedded in the BIOS you can use the product key that was provided with the device. This is usually on a sticker that will be located on the side or bottom of the machine.
If your OEM device is a newer one and has the product key embedded in the BIOS then an upgrade will activate your device with a digital entitlement as long as the versions match as mentioned earlier.
Once Windows 10 is activated on any device, as of build 10240 or higher, that unit can now run Insider Previews or public releases of Windows 10 using the same edition without any need for product keys.
Moving a device in and out of those states is possible because it will have its activation via digital entitlement.
Of course retail licenses for Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 can be used to activate the same version of Windows 10 and ultimately receive the digital entitlement for that system.

So where can you get a copy of the media? I have Win 7 home premium and was considering upgrading to Win 10, but I don't want to mess around with an upgrade and left-over files. I don't know where you get the media though...

There are links to the media creation tool on this page.Remember what you download must match version you are upgrading from for your use but of course you can download any version you like for use for other people.
