True, but a lot of people play indie games. Especially those of us who are now well into our 40s.

Depends how you use your computer. I for instance when i play Diablo 2R have chrome open with 30tabs so when i farm runes also watch a stream or a video on the second monitor. Having some monitoring apps in background that takes 60-70% cpu usage or more on a 16threads. I can imagine with 8threads pc would froze.

very thoughtful thread... what i was thinking of would be the new generation NUC and how that would be obliterating what most of us use as HTPC/game streamers. i've historically have used my still functioning but outdated gear in a Silverstone case in the den. as soon as life partners become aware of powerful new options like that, all the bulky old crap is at risk. i've had to "donate" a lot of gear because of the KEF T301/101 are wall mountable (and kick the butt of any soundbar). i didn't need to make a change, but i had to. a 12th gen NUC i could see replacing my legacy gear but i'm not sayin' a word. especially because i like having a gpu in the den. but a college kid? hell a NUC, a monitor, a VESA mount and here we go... especially because this year's class isn't used to dedicated gpu's anyway

7600k can only be used for some office work today. Nice purchase lol 😛
My office pc uses my old 3300X 🙂

it sure would . I switched to AMD for that reason , i wass pisssed and feeled cheated with 7600K , damned 4c/4T for 200 eur i paid for it.
No, it wouldn't. It takes a long time to get new chip designs through the design/production process and it was literally a few months after AMD dropped high core count chips when Intels next gen had increased cores. Had they been planning on only offering 4 core 8 thread chips and were actually caught offguard, it would have been at least a year before higher core chips and the required motherboards would have been ready. The only place where Intel really screwed up in recent years was their disastrous 10nm transition.

Amd has also enjoyed a full year domination in desktop cpu market before alder lake.
Do you just enjoy making stuff up? While AMD has made some gains over the past couple years, Intel still has 75% of the CPU market according to Mercury Research. Websites need to stop writing articles on mindfactory.de sales because they are highly deceptive due to the company being an AMD focused retailer and not indicative of the market at large. Would you use CPU sales figures from Dell to determine overall cpu market share? lol.

Ofcourse they would , and they did . Like you said they had all technological means , but there wasn't any competition so they decided to cream money from quad cores as long as they did , while they could easily offer 6/8 cores at same price point . Abomination like 7600k shouldn't exist that time , not at that price . Even i was fool enough to buy it.

Intel had the dies for multiple cores for years. they just kept them to hedt/xeon as the profit margin was far greater for X than Z chipsets. i know because i was running X79/99/299 because it was the only way to get more than 4 cores until AMD came out with Ryzen. Intel was caught off guard because they believed multicore multithreading was a niche market. it isn't and it wasn't.

Yes, just check out Core i7-7800X 🙂. Still relevant CPU , that would in theory run on regular LGA1151 . But they made it only for "professional market" What a joke , year later after ryzen appeared in panic they were releasing 6-8 core SKUs.

might be interesting for avx-512 workloads on the cheap.

Very fast quadcores tbh, im pretty sure they will be fine for gaming for non new AAA raytraced 128players Edit: based on results from cpu monkey they are at i5 10400f, ryzen 7 1700x multicore level( which can run all games just fine. So this can be a very interesting cpu, i hope to see a unlocked version plz intel?

I remember when my new $119 i3 outpaced a Core 2 quad and 6-core amd phenom ii x6 1100t at gaming...screaming little processor it was at the time. Sandy Bridge

It's kinda same situation now , depending how gimped cache will afffect performance . this quad will be best . NAH sayers quads are dead will be proven they are wrong 🙂
