Here is the thing though - whack a GPU on that and you now have to drag cables again.

I have seen prototype addressing this issue - it had power connector on MB and GPU so it did not need any cables whatsoever....

I see they have a slide so you can hold up front side of card instead of hanging there, and with the big coolers it's a plus.
