I have always wanted something like this, maybe a "performance profile" in the power management settings. If you enable it, it sets the CPU to high performance, and turns off all the unwanted background processes and services you dont need when gaming. Always thought Microsoft would make a killing if they just released a version of Windows 10 as the "Gamer version". We have Home, Pro, Ultimate, etc why not have a Windows 10 Gamer Edition. Where it comes without all the stupid processes and tasks that run seemingly whenever they want to in the background.

I always wanted something like that. A slim debloated Windows version. If this Game Mode works for all games and not only for those crap UWP games then I will be happy. I guess MS never released a Gamer Windows Version because their focus is on Enterprise first.

They'll never release a gamer windows version because disabling all that stuff does almost nothing. There are applications that do it now - run A/B benchmarks with it, the difference is within margin of error. I personally used to do all that black viper guide nonsense + was really careful about background apps and whatnot, until I realized that it literally does nothing for performance. It would be absolutely pointless for Microsoft to support an entirely different SKU for that. And then you alt tab to go do something between games and you're like "oh yeah, everything is disabled and I can't do anything productive at all".

Sure as hell hope it's not exclusive to only UWL. But then again i doubt it will make much of a difference, my resources already are 99% free mostly , API level changes barely do any changes these days, can't see disabling some processes or setting some priorities to real time , helping. Unless it's something more than that.

Because it's the only OS that pretty much runs every game, and essential for many newer games. I've used this via third party software before, but would be good to have it built into the OS. Not that I have done extensive testing, but can't say I noticed performance improvements from using it. It's like tweaking the OS for extra performance never saw the point, and actually think it makes things worse, but at least the one click solutions would put everything back to normal when you finished gaming.
You pay quite a price for the few windows Store games though. And you cant get max quality in Tomb Raider unless you use DX11. DX12 is for the most part pointless. I dont need to tweak Windows 7 to get max perfomance. You do need to tweak Windows 10 to prevent it upsetting your gameplay. Even then no guarantees. I install drivers, play games, get 60fps constant. And use a nicer looking OS that lets me do what I want.

There are some people that report windows updates interfering with gaming sessions, but I've personally never had the problem and I've been gaming on 10 since it launched. Game performance under Windows 10 is higher and the entire driver stack (thanks to WDDM 2.0) is significantly more stable. That being said, I think Windows 7 is fine and I don't fault people for not upgrading. It's not really necessary - most of the features are "nice" but not something I would require to have.

Maybe it'll help stop windows deciding it wants to download an update during a gaming session clogging up the internet session then.... I've had to go into the group policy settings to set windows update to notify and the lan connection to a "metered" connection. Windows 10 is awful if you have a **** slow internet connection if you're wanting to do any internet related tasks since it decides to update whenever it wants/needs to.

M$ is desperate to push Win10 down gamers throat.
So a feature that could possibly benefit gamers is somehow now a negative? Wow dude, just wow.

You can always use NTLite to slim down your Windows install. I hope this is not exclusive to Windows store games. I have had nothing but trouble with GoW4 on my PC. I have decided to just play it on my XB1S as half the time I try and launch it on my PC it crashes and I have to delete and redownload it.

What's that saying? I'll believe it when I see it. 🙂 #PC Gaming

I would like to see OS lock as part of this to stop system from getting hacked while gaming.

Well, I just bought Forza 3 and ffs, this is only game that bsods, random restarts, or "run of out memory" every hour. Maybe that update will fix it...? MS product, ms system...geez... And their dx12?...pointless to add anything... So much hope, so much hype, and all we got was same story as Vista and dx10...

Steam's Gabe Newell calls it a "catastrophe".
He was throwing his toys out the pram well before Win 10 though if I remember correctly Steam OS was a direct result of Gabe being all huffy about features he saw in Win 8 as being counter to Steams long term survival. The reality since then is that Steam has done more to hurt Steam than anything MS has done. Paid for mods Steam Greenlight Steam Sales that are just meh As for a Game mod for Win 10... shouldn't a decent OS already shut down and disable programs and features that are no longer needed whilst you are doing something else? Why include a push button feature that the user needs to activate? It reminds me of those system cleaning programs that claim to reclaim lost RAM and resource at the push of a button.

To those who doubt Windows 10 is THE operating system foe gaming currently - well, it is. I stubbornly refused to move on from Win 7 but eventually gave in as I wanted to try DX12. DX12 is pointless at the moment, but suddenly I was getting MUCH better performance in games. If you're using SLI and you're not using Win 10, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

They don't need to. Every serious gamer should already be using it

Totally agreed, no problems with WU here either and I also have been using Win 10 since launch day. All my games run flawlessly and that includes the UWP ones like Forza: Horizon 3 and Motorsport 6 Apex. The game mode sounds great to me. Windows 10 just keeps getting better with every major update and it was already excellent to begin with.

As long as it doesn't turn out to be just more bloatware then it might be good that at least they are looking into gaming performance. Whether or not they will implement it for all games is yet to be seen but hopefully they have learned from previous mistakes and not pis off millions of gamers in the process.
