I don't understand the purpose of this build. If the browser can't even download files and there is no CD/DVD drive, it is probably going to be quite difficult to use, even for educational purposes. I mean I'm all for cut down, lean version of windows 10, but it already exists as a LTSB version.

Yeah ... same here ... LTSB is the only "lean" edition of windows 10. This crap is lean on functionality and nothing else. They even left the store in to advertise to you!

regedit.exe takes up so much space. That'll make your Windows lean if you delete it, for sure.

Delete system32 while you're at it!

just make sure 3D Paint is in there. Srew the regedit! 😀

And cortana! do not ship without it, remove the file manager before, but not that.

Most places don't use local installation for an OS, usually it's deployed through MDT. Very easy though to make your own slimmed down version of the OS though.

I also don't really get why they don't just push more for LTSB. Either way, I'm glad they have a lean version.

It may be easy, but very tedious. I don't want to have to spend a couple hours removing things and disabling processes. There's a lot that Windows doesn't let you remove, where you need other tools to do the work (and I shouldn't have to install something to remove something). I don't want to pay for a full license seeing as I don't want half the crap that Windows comes with. I just want enough to get me going and take care of everything else myself.

I hope that ReactOS will speed up the development soon, and we will not need weight loss

Unfortunately, ReactOS is worse at running Windows programs than Mac or Linux with WINE, which is a little ironic considering how much code ReactOS shares with WINE.

Without any information on what really is missing, it's hard to say if this makes sense or not. So far, nothing scared me, since you download another browser to circumvent that edge thing (requires another PC on the side, or these days, a smartphone), there's reg editors on the net, and optical drives are practically dead to the average user anyway... not really thinking this is necessarily crippling it beyond use, but what's the use of this edition? Cheaper pricing?

I can see why MS would have multiple flavors, but, I do agree they have too much. They should really just have the following: * Lean/LTSB (no extraneous services, no special themes, no cheesy Start apps, no Cortana, etc; only the essentials to have a working system) * Standard (a mix of what Home and Pro comes with) * Premium (comes with a whole bunch of MS products pre-installed, like the Office suite and Skype) * Server (pretty obvious) Since MS has shoved the Windows Store down everyone's throats, a lot of what makes these flavors different largely doesn't really matter anymore.

Another prove that Nadella as CEO is a cancer. They also continue to slowly downgrade the Pro edition, I just discovered they removed the GUI for ordering the network adapter priority (I know that's not new but damn..). Wanna remove some a couple of GB of disk space (are we gonna to see AGAIN 32-GB storage devices? In 2018???) they can tell OEMs to remove unnecessary drivers in the local repository as tweaking the paging file and reduce the amount of space of system restore and recovery.

For God sake M$, cut down all bloatware and call it "lean". Not removing essential features and calling it "lean". I don't understand where all it all going.

That would be ideal (after all, I've been begging for a stripped-down version since Windows 2000), but things have changed a lot since then, in many ways. Computers are a lot more common these days, so they end up in households or offices of people who never really knew how to use them. The average person doesn't know how to maintain things, get the right plugins, use the right tools, and know who to trust. Because of and in addition to that, computers have a lot more hats to wear than they did 20 years ago (wow it's really been that long?) and Microsoft is not about to pass up an opportunity to profit on people who just need a place to start. You may argue "a lot of the stuff they offer is free" but keep in mind that this demographic MS is trying to appeal to (which is most people) are the kind of people who buy Macs: they're computers for those who don't feel like thinking about anything. Apple doesn't charge anything for most of there programs; even the OS itself is now free. But once you get into their market and use their stores, that's where their long-term profit ends up. These companies need to offer enough features to get people to come to them. The annoying thing about Windows is it just happens to come with a lot of garbage that don't appeal to most people; at least Mac's software has some semblance of quality. It's unrealistic to expect MS to drop their behaviors, but I think it's fair to ask for a middle ground where they stop penny-pinching their variants and give 3 distinct tiers of pre-packaging (complete, moderate, and none). EDIT: It's also important to consider that a lot of the adware during the 90s and early 2000s that came with a lot of pre-built PCs made Windows look a lot worse than it really was (though, Windows was and still is a sub-par OS). By shipping their own software and offering cheaper variants of Windows to OEMs, this helped remove some of the adware without hurting the OEMs profits too much.
