Not deleting personal possibly-non-backed-up files seems like a good idea. "New in Windows 10: Here's a great new feature! We won't delete your wedding pictures!"

Until then, users are advised to use their computers as little as possible.
Because that's what happens when m$ is at it's best again... you better not use your PC 😀

If they need room to perform the upgrade instead of deleting user files why not delete unwanted "apps", Microsoft can then shove... I mean re-download them once the upgrade process is complete.

Honestly, if you're dumb enough that you leave anything important on your C drive and don't move the location of folders such as pictures/mydocs/videos etc then I don't know what to tell you. The only thing on my C drive is windows itself and programs. Everything else is on another partition.

The problem is that this behavior is still the case for every day users. Would've been much more sensible to have PC's with multiple drives to automatically put Documents, Pictures, ... on the 2nd, larger drive or at least ASK users during initial setup. For us it's common sense mostly though.

Dear Microsoft : If you could test YOUR OWN F**KING PRODUCT BEFORE FORCING IT UPON US, THAT'D BE GREAT! Thanks! Yeah, how does something as major & detrimental as this bug, and its UNMISTAKABLY-NOTICEABLE and IMMEDIATE effects, go "unnoticed" by Microsoft itself and its 131,000 global employees? 😡

They knew. They just didn't care. No "going unnoticed", it was reported before by the insiders as well. They just didn't care to consider this.

First of all: Tell your aunt Lucy that she shouldn't put her picture in the folder called "Pictures" that Microsoft has designed for her to put her pictures in... because it's not safe, because you are smarter than Microsoft. Second of all: You seem to be quick to call other people dumb, yet you think that by storing files in a separate partition is going to magically save those files from being inaccessible when the drive breaks down. Brilliant!

I have noticed that "clean" installs no longer install any crappy trials of Candy Crush etc.

I used data recovery software immediately to see if I could get any of my files back. Nothing but a single video and it was too damaged to view. I hope every bigwig at M$ get their personal files permanently deleted to see how they like the taste of it.

You missed the fine print. It says they reserve the right to delete your wedding photos anyway.

What about breaking crucial modding tools such as FrostyTools suite (for running Frostbite games with mods) or CGF Explorer for modding Fifa.

No such a problem on Win 7 x64 Sp1. I will wait till Windows 10 gets out of the public beta stage during the following X years.

How much could it cost? Put a few nerds in a room and test shit. Imagine that! 😱

So did anyone here ACTUALLY lose files? Do you know ANYONE that lost files? Seems waaaaay overblown. My install went flawlessly.

No, no-one lost anything, that's why MS completely pulled the entire build and then posted a blog about the issue and how they fixed it, then pushed out the fix to the slow and release preview rings and will not push to the public until they are sure it has been fixed
