Sometimes I honestly wonder why Microsoft isn't buying AMD.

Or to help humanity give AMD a hand with a philanthropist type hand out. This would allow AMD to build new tech and catch up a bit to Intel and the result i believe would be beneficial to everyone, since the future is meant to have a clever chip in everything including us.

There's no helping humanity. If they bought AMD they would be basically behind every console of their competitors. Something like Samsung with Apple. Deadly enemies until Apple needs Samsung fabs and screens 😛

I'm curious how much the NSA pay them. I don't believe conspiracies, but this one isn't one, MS are definitely sharing the data they collect with the NSA. It'd be extremely naive to believe otherwise.

But that kind of cash... There is no tax on them, nor you see them in official revenue statement.

Microsoft probably couldn't buy AMD because of antitrust issues, although in the US these issues would probably miraculously disappear if the alternative was for AMD to be sold to a foreign entity. There's also the licencing and access to intellectual property, seeing as AMD needs x86 intellectual property from Intel, and Intel need AMD64 intellectual property from AMD. If a foreign sale occurs, Intel may not be allowed to share their intellectual property, which would just mean Intel will lose AMD64... that's everything 64-bit related! Microsoft could however, invest in AMD, although I'm not sure at what percentage of ownership where antitrust starts to become an issue. It could end up being that Microsoft and Samsung could each purchase a third with a third remaining as AMD, or something along those lines. However even in such a situation, Microsoft wouldn't be allowed access to knowledge pertaining to CPU's for future PS4 or Nintendo consoles, so that's a grey area. It may be the case that it is compartmentalised.
Interesting MS ans Samsung would like to buy AMD but for one reason (antitrust) or another (foreign) they can't. After spending years integrating ATI into AMD last September AMD split out the integrated GPU dep. (old ATI) as a separate bussiness called RTG. Maybe AMD made this move to be allowed to sell it.Who knows? I don't think the US Gov will let any foreign company buy AMD as a whole including key IPs like AMD64,

Why would they buy a company that is always playing 2nd fiddle to intel?

After reading your comments and thoughts my fellow gurus, wishing for someone to buy AMD and release a new and amazing GPU, I cannot keep it a secret any more. There's a reason no one buys AMD. It already bought. The deal was closed in 2015 and 1st installment is already made. Expect a 5x perf/watt GPU in 2017. Cheers, Koniakki, CEO of Multi-Trustfunds Inc. http://i.imgur.com/BT8vZ9Y.jpg

1) Core 2 cpu design came from Intel's licensing of x86-64 from AMD. You may not recall, but it was only a few years ago that Intel was very much playing second fiddle to AMD's 64-bit Athlons...;) AMD kept that tech performance lead for almost two years. 2) Intel has nothing to compare with AMD's GPU designs and business, even today. AMD got off track because of management mistakes a few years back, but the company seems determined to turn that around with a slew of new GPU and CPU products coming this year--and their upcoming "Zen" x86 64-bit cpus are expected to equal if not outpace Intel's fastest i7x cpus. We shall see if AMD is regaining its old fire...this year will tell the tale for AMD, imo...It is very dismal and depressing to think of what personal computing might be like today had their been no AMD...
