I'm not sure raising the clockspeeds on a chip that was fabricated specifically for the PS5 could have been a last-minute decision. The chip was already validated to run at those clockspeeds and this would have been communicated to Sony within the contract for the chip. Sony had to then design and validate the motherboard to deliver the required power to the APU etc... Given this was a smaller chip, they could still clock it up and have it spend the same power or less than the one in the XBSX while having almost the same performance, so they're still safe on the tech spec side of things if one were to compare the two consoles.
Sony has issues with their sleep mode, or whatever name they call it.

That's what's bizarre to me... it's not the same hardware, just the same architecture with individual optimizations/tweaks; the XBSX IIRC has a staggering 50% more shaders, it should be way better, yet most games perform roughly the same which is criminal.
my guess is the OS might be killing it more than microsoft wants to admit, causing performance to be left on the table. cause yeah the ps5 is weaker in theory yet somehow its often on par, and ive seen some games where its better

it looks like the xbox series X has an asymmetrical memory architecture, with 10gb being "fast" 560gb/s and 6gb being slow 336gb/s , might not sound all that important, but such a thing could be an issue as games start to use more memory, as there will be a penalty when using the extended memory space for graphics, superficially this resembles the gtx 970 3.5gb fiasco, but not as extreme. as well , the ps5 has some special custom sony hardware, such as "cache scrubbers" , which could have a significant effect on performance, since the ps5 apparently only has 2mb of l2 cache for gpu, and the xbox has 5mb, by comparison, so there probably is something to the secret sauce. 52 cus are only as good as you can keep them busy.

How much does the OS take up?

Intresting the Xbox does this? I remeber this happen when 970 and how it turned out bad idea, , why would microsoft do this? then again it could be just microsoft being microsoft and want to cut corners?

I would like to know this too, would like to know how memory PS5 OS take for that matter. But i cant see it being more then 1gb I would think they would want that OS footprint on OS to be small as possible when come to memory usage., to have bloated like it on Windows would be horrid design imo

Their OS on the Xbox is a lot leaner than it's Windows OS counterpart.

about 2.5 gb according to eurogamer anyway, but this could be reduced or changed since launch.

likely cost, seems like they are using 6, 2gb memory chips and 4,1gb chips, for a total of 10 chips, so in effect for the first 10gb of address space, you get the full 320bit memory bus, but for the top 6gb you only have 192bit essentially. if they were using all 2gb chips it would be 20gb total (or 10gb if they were using 1gb chips.) if its managed properly it probably won't be much of an issue, but I could see games having issues, if they don't take it into account, like say a port of a game native to ps5.

well if it 2.5gb eurogamer states, then that about same memory windows 10 take on system just booting into windows, I would hope that was reduced cause that seem excessive imo

ah yes, off really isnt off, if you can press button and turn of it actual on, now it actual off in that it actual has "boot" and load system or of something like windows "fastboot" is another question. I know on Sony side of thing I never use "sleep" most cause it was never really off and sony has thing about have large led light being on even in sleep that sleep lead to issue there much like does in windows .and I dont even use sleep/hibernation in windows or on my pc. These day only way to know for fact something is actual "off" is unplug it or turn it off from power switch, if it has one

Remember when shutting down actually meant it turned off? I don't own a current generation console yet, but if I did I'd turn it off by the plug socket too.
You just go into the settings and click fully shut down, that is the xbox off totally, i have had my watt meter on everything and if you turn it off this way, it is off, no background stuff running and no wattage being drawn, but as you said flicking the switch on the wall should also be done, i personally never leave anything switched on at the walls anyway ever.

Surge protectors are a must these days, as the weather is unpredictable.

^^^Yeap, i have never had my PC,consoles, monitors or 4k tv connected to the wall unless i have a good surge protector in the middle, and so far, touch wood, never lost a device, hell my pc is still going strong with the same mobo, i7 core Haswell, 16 gigs of memory, and PSU, that were all put in 10 years ago when i built it. 🙂 Did i just jinx my pc? lol
