That is why i delete the files beforehand so windows is unable to delete them 🙂
That's why I do not place anything of importance on system drive. Always ready to reinstall. Back in the day, I was junctionning Documents to other drive. But steam has saves on cloud anyway.

This is exactly correct. I didn't notice right away. It wasn't until I was grabbing a file with IDM and it asked to create a new directory...that was the WFT moment. Every folder in Downloads was missing. I might not have even noticed for longer because typically I don't use the default IDM folders except for stuff like PDF release notes and stuff like that so it is all in one place to get rid of.
It wasn't even until you mentioned it that I noticed everything in my downloads folder was wiped. I had a lot of stuff there, luckily nothing critical. Thankfully I keep a copy of everything important on a backup drive.

I was holding out before updating because of the Broadwell-E and KB4100347 update. Now that I sorted that, I was going to update. looks like holding out was a good thing.

I was wondering which files and from where, I looked on microsoft.com;
Windows 10 1809 update deleted all files from Documents!
Didn't happen to me on 2 PC's I've updated... but I'm going to hold off on updating the 3rd just in case.

All my shit in the "Documents" folder are still there, which is where game saves are by default, but my entire Downloads folder got deleted.

Everything went smooth here on two PC's. Although Ccleaner uninstalled itself saying it wasn't compatable with this version of windows.

I know this is a stupid thing to say but it really does make me wonder if they really do test before pushing live builds to the general public.

This only affects people that use One Drive though, which most likely people use it unknowingly. I don't use it anyways, so didn't have any issues with it.

But I don't use One Drive. It deleted my shit anyway.

Not all saves are in the cloud though. We got a saved games folder (c:/users/save games) , but what is the point if very few are using them. TBH game saves on PC is a HUGE mess.

Source? This is the first time I've heard any confidence in the cause.

Yup, game saves are a mess. There's no standardization or standards at all. Part of that is the changing file and folder structures changes over the years.

ever since my first SSD c:\>MKLINK d:\users c:\users (syntax maybe incorrect, been awhile) has saved me a lot of hassle w/clean installs. saves all docs, pics, downloads and music along with any (config) info that could be anywhere in appdata, saved games or whatever. keep steam there too - because i am silly keeping my ssd at 50%.

I haven't noticed anything going missing yet.
This is why it is called "isolated" repport... most of the time it is OK. But what if it's happen with a billion dollars file? Who will pay for this? (yes the secretary can update the OS without backup important files and without the consentement of the IT in order to play to plant vs zombie).
Passus:

Whoa! glad I did a clean install
It's most of the time the best way
lucidus:

Seriously ... it was more important for them to go to Florida for ignite for an entire week rather than fix this pile of garbage.
Nope they are in Barcelona this time 🙂 for M$ show.

That would not save you with this bug. Tool responsible would simply follow link to another filesystem.

my understanding is the "bug" was not having 20Gbs free on the system drive, which isn't accounted in a symbolic link. so . . .

While I updated my PC without any issue at all I have to say that MS is utter garbage the last few years. They had the brilliant idea to fire all the professional QA team and experiment their crap beta software on people's machines. All this for sort term profits. Same shit happens with all Windows 10 updates lately. There are far too many bugs. They knew this bug before they stupidly decided to deploy this crap on our PCs and they also skipped the Release Preview Ring. Task Manager CPU usage is also broken and they also knew it. Meanwhile Dona Sarkar was busy taking selfies for her Twitter account. Nuttela belongs in a jar on a super-market shelve and not on MS CEO chair. I won't even talk about their non-existent design team and their utter crap unfinished File Explorer "dark mode".

I upgraded a 32GB eMMC miniPC with about 12GB free and it didn't delete anything, seems random tbh

Good thing I always keep my important stuff on a separate drive than the system SSD (in addition to backing it up). That said, it's unacceptable that they pushed out an update with so many severe issues as this one.
