With this news, I'm not expecting any HBM consumer/gaming videocard from nVidia for a few more years.

Well. Due to the fact that newer AAA games require more memory at higher resolutions means that the memory needs to be faster and more efficient over the years to come to increase the desired performance and fulfill texture/shadow demands on each game/rendering software.

Basically Radeon GPU's introduced to us GDDR4/5/HBM memory and probably HBM2 in next couple of months. Nvidia just seems to pile on.

dont know why ppl are always so fixated on what type/version etc is being used and/or for long it's been on the market.
its virtually irrelevant, as long as performance doesnt suffer...
what do i care if the basic design of a 4 stroke engine is +140y old, when i have a 500HP/1000Nm engine that gets 150mpg?
i dont see any reason for something faster than gddr5, for any card prior maxwell/pascal/fury gen...
