I kind of wonder when the signaling issues on the PCB due to high frequencies will overcome the price differential of HBM + interposer.

Me Neither, i looked at my last big GPU purchase before this one, a 4870x2 which was purchased roughly 9 - 10 years ago. even that had GDDR5 on it...

It feels like GDDR5 has been around forever. I don't even remember what the last card I had with GDDR3 was.
GTX 2XX series was still GDDR3. HD 3870 had GDDR4. Even some HD 2900 has 1GB DDR4 on them. Others were GDDR3. HD 4870 was first gpu with GDDR5. My last GDDR3 gpu was a HD 3850.

Well. Due to the fact that newer AAA games require more memory at higher resolutions means that the memory needs to be faster and more efficient over the years to come to increase the desired performance and fulfill texture/shadow demands on each game/rendering software.

Basically Radeon GPU's introduced to us GDDR4/5/HBM memory and probably HBM2 in next couple of months. Nvidia just seems to pile on.

dont know why ppl are always so fixated on what type/version etc is being used and/or for long it's been on the market. its virtually irrelevant, as long as performance doesnt suffer... what do i care if the basic design of a 4 stroke engine is +140y old, when i have a 500HP/1000Nm engine that gets 150mpg? i dont see any reason for something faster than gddr5, for any card prior maxwell/pascal/fury gen...

Maxwell using GGDR5, Pascal 1070 and down is GDDR5, and Fury is HBM. Your statement is already so broken. It isnt just the memory that matters but the interface as well. Nvidia crams stupid fast GGDR5 into a 256 bus which flops at high res. Stuff like these post usually make people nostalgic and look back and how gpu trends go. Alot of us didnt think GGDR5 would be kicking around for almost ten years now. Have no seen someone is actually fixated on anything. Just your perceptions of discussions on this thread.

So what you're saying is you would not want an advancement in technology revolutionizing the 4 stroke engine making it not the original "basic" design that gets you 500mpg? You compared something that is not easily comparable to eachother. Not only that, but are we not a technology-based forum? do we not want technology to go further and further? I believe you forget that most of the time most game developers try and do with what is most readily available. For instance, if the most common amount of graphics ram that is used is 4GB, they will likely strive to be below 4GB in usage as to not cause everyone to freak out saying how bad the game performs. Once it gets to 8GB as the norm, they will aim higher. Same thing with speed. So why not want advancements to happen that provide more then we technically need "now"?

HD 3870 had GDDR4.
I never knew this, I thought the only GPU to ever use GDDR4 was the massive flop that was the X1950XTX GPU. I know it was the first to ever use it, but the GPU failed hard as it didn't bring any huge leaps or benefits over the then excellent X1900XTX. I used to have two X1900XTX GPU's in crossfire back then using that stupid external dongle cable.... when it worked it was insane. I remember running Oblivion at 1680x1050 at over 100fps outdoors with it totally maxed out. My eyes have never been the same again :P

Quattro's are out now with HBM2 so AMD will not be introducing it to "us" they will be introducing it to the gaming market.
