I've always wondered about the "These rules apply to everyone." part, in that does Amazon pay Apple 30% on every sale done through an iOS app?

No, would be my interpretation as it is not a subscription of a service but a portal to transactions post-install of the app, versus pre-install of the app up-front cost of actually purchasing the app itself. Additionally, as the app and the website and, all other portals, all have the exact same charge for goods, then there is no foul play. The big thing in the T's and C's for Apple is taking people elsewhere, but, as Amazon has existed before the App Store, and, one can buy Apple products at the App Store, no one really considers the two in competition with each other, or, to be undermining each other. But you are right; it is a fine line.

To further elaborate on what @Loobyluggs said, I get the impression the line comes down to whether the store buys something that runs on iOS vs something completely unrelated to iOS. So, the Amazon app is ok because buying physical tangible items has nothing to do with Apple's ecosystem. The Epic Games Store being free yet allowing you to play games on your iOS device is a pretty egregious way of evading the App Store and cutting out Apple's profits, as well as their screening process (whether you prefer that or not). So, I would say the line is actually pretty well-defined. Whether you agree with where Apple drew that line or their greedy approach to their store is a whole other story.

But then there's Spotify with a free and subscription tiered service, where the subscription gets the same 30% cut. Like, I understand why Apple takes a cut on App Store transactions because they maintain the service, vet the content and provide SDKs, workshops et al for free to developers. That does come at a cost. Still, the amount of trolling Epic is doing is great.

Additionally, it does not allow you to take the person away from the iOS store, to another place on the internet (Apple ALWAYS want apps to keep the user on the device and not draw traffic away - that's a big thing to them, and I get it) They also do not allow you to sign up for 'prime' membership, or, any subscription service. They are allowed to show people prime membership benefits, but, they are not allowed to take subscription payments through the site.

The Apple cartel will take their cut of every transaction u do on an app other than for physical items. And if u sell that content (ie: an skin) to an Apple device user though other means they take u down (that's what epic did).

Here's an example - dumb people, make lazy stupid content on youtube that takes 0 effort - example: "What I ate today" - 1 million views; meanwhile a well researched historical topic - 30 views. Guess who will make more cash? Exactly.

Welp, time to sell my iPhone.
data/avatar/default/avatar37.webp
about time someone challenged Apple to the App store monopoly they maintain on iOS. Everyone has been conditioned into thinking that iOS and the App Store aren't mutually exclusive when they most certainly are.
