That's not really hacking though is it, no more than me saying give me your pin code or I'll kill you.

I fully agree, still need the owners fingerprint to do what they did.

Yes and no...

Yes and no... I think the point is that Apple said it is new technology that is more secure which was proven to be false argument. The scanner is just more sensitive than before so no new technology there. And it can be circumvented exactly the same way as before if you just make more precise fake.

First you need some kind of colored powder or superglue to lift the fingerprint. Then you have to scan the fingerprint, invert it and print it with a resolution of 1200dpi or more onto a transparent sheet. After that, you build your fake finger by smearing pink latex milk or white wood glue into the pattern that the toner created onto the transparent sheet and wait for it to set. Finally, the CCC writes, β€œthe thin latex sheet is lifted from the sheet, breathed on to make it a tiny bit moist and then placed onto the sensor to unlock the phone.” This method should work for virtually every fingerprint scanner on the market today.

you can also access someone's phone if you kidnap them and torture them until they give up their password and/or fingerprint.

This does nothing if someone really wants your phone, it won't stop anyone. Tbh useless feature.

I think you are missing the point really and looking too deeply into it. Its not supposed to be all 'James Bond'. To me a finger print scanner is good because the common thief will have a harder time selling the phone on, so may be more reluctant to taking your phone over another. However the real use of it is to stop the wife checking your texts and emails, end of story.

No security measure is ever going to stop a determined hacker/cracker/criminal/government agency, etc. The iPhone scanner is there to deter the small time thief, a nosy friend, your significant other and to make iTunes purchases/Apple authentication easier. A gimmick - maybe, but not entirely useless.

The same could be said for passwords.

No surprise at all.. Why did it take so long now? :wanker:

I love how everyone hates on this because it's from Apple. People never complained about Google's face recognition unlock even though it's a pile of garbage because you don't have to use it. This is no different, except it's actually useful.

The Face recognition was pretty rubbish. It was easy to trick, only needed a photo, and that's if it even recognised your own face in bad light.

Can it blend?

Of course if you phone is stolen it won't help a bit it will be in someone elses use in future for sure. No matter the security

I didn't even have a clue it had such useless feature 😯

This is really aimed at the people (like me) who couldn't be bothered to use a passcode on their device because I'd rather get into the phone faster.

When I first heard apple was doing a fingerprint scanner where you simply press the finger, I was like "they could not possibly have a worse idea." iphones are a goldmine of fingerprints. Not only is it a TOUCH screen device but due to how glossy the screen is, you can see a full-blown fingerprint in plain-sight. It is so effortless to just copy any one of the dozens of fingerprints that plague the screen, and I'm surprised this hasn't been "hacked" sooner. Microsoft used this same type of fingerprint scanner as a USB peripheral and it has been repeatedly proven that those types of scanners are severely security flawed. I would say they're equally as insecure as trying to guess the password of the average computer illiterate, with the only difference being fingerprints are more tedious to replicate. The scanners where you swipe your finger are far more secure because it not only smears the fingerprint but the surface area is too small to get a useful sample. While they're not flawless either, they're probably one of the most secure methods of protecting personal information, assuming you have a good password.
