Regarding Intel's own slides the bandwidth will be "half of current DDR4 DIMM modules" (funny / silly sidenote: mentioned was "7,5GB/s per Optane DIMM" (IIRC) and "15GB/s per DDR4 DIMM", which would result in us all using >>DDR4-1866 DIMMs<< ...) while energy consumption triples. So they threw out the argument about "density" ("how much GB of RAM can I put into my finite amount of slots"). Sure, I always buy memory and don't give a fu** about performance, especially in a datacenter, as mentioned. "Sure, we have your data, it will take a year and some months to output the stuff you want in comparision to the couple of minutes with any other provider, but hey: ALL IS CACHED IN MEMORY ALREADY!! This is top notch sh!tz directly off the shelf for you! Full 360° cyber spectrum technology with artificial learning capabilities and proactive self-healing!" 😀 ... TL;DR: REALLY?! EDIT: That means my AMD DUAL-channel 3200MHz setup (2 DIMMs with 25600MB/s = 51200MB/s total) is basically >>almost<< as fast as an Optane setup in OCTA-channel (8 DIMMs at once, so 8x 7500MB/s = 60000MB/s total)!! And an octa-channel setup with DDR4-4800 (PC4-38400!) would give you about 307200MB/s bandwidth (whoa! that is 307GB/s!) which would be equal to .... a bit more than 40 DIMMs of Octane memory, read and written to at the same time! Numbers are great! 😀

Isn't Optane a HDD caching scheme? Seems like you could buy lots of SSD's for $8k. Not 512GBs worth, of course, but then you wouldn't need to.

You would have to buy, say one of those PCIe addin cards with multiple M.2 slots on them (like ASUS Hyper Kit) and run them with 4x 2TB in a RAID0 config. Downside: 1x PCIe 3.0 x16 "wasted", 5 points of failures (1 controller card and 4 drives), probably others I cannot think of (never had an Optane system, I only know the specs and some details).

for the price of 128gb of optane ram you can buy real and faster DDR4 and have some money left, and server farms pay even less for ram since they dont use overclocked ram but 2333 and its dirt cheap

lolz everyone is loading up on the comedy...and Intel deserves some stick...and this is the other shoe dropping after buying out Micron's interest in Optane. and yeah, simply ludicrous. but that's now and not five years from now. and although many geeks lust after, and will buy this, this is very much for data center...remember Intel's announce 12 channel memory. optane works fine as an ssd on AMD, even bootable...someone will make a work around. more importantly, the optane allows for a different form factor as well, but idk about cooling .

This is exactly what I was thinking of. If you get 2x: ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Card V2 and then RAID0 8x NVMe's or RAID1 one them with something like the new Evo 970 Plus drives at a 1TB a drive you would get insane speed and a bigger capacity for a fraction of the price: 2x | x16 M.2 add in cards = 64.99 x 2 = 129.98 8x | Evo 970 Plus 1TB = 249.99 x 8 = 1999.92 | total | = 2129.9 8x | Evo 970 Plus 512GB = 127.99 x 8 = 1023.92 | total | = 1153.9 https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-MZ-V7S500B/dp/B07M7Q21N7/ https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1460396-REG/asus_hyper_m_2_x16_card_v2_hyper_m_2_x16_pcie.html A 8x RAID0 Evo 970 Plus 1TB would be insane! At stock a single drive hits 3500 MB/sec reads and 33000 MB/sec writes which is faster than DDR4(I think) so in 8x RAID0 the performance would be off the charts! Also you cold always RAID5 9 drives to get the best of both worlds.

The new xeon cpu's support up to 5.5TB? of ram. This is where the Optane has it's sellingpoint. You can get one stick of Optane dimm memory with huge capacity. 128GB Optane stick is cheaper than one 128GB memory stick. 256 and 512GB sticks does not exist. In that way, it's possible to get more memory with Optane dimm. Optane dimm does not loose the data, when power is lost either. If you don't know what it is, you don't need it 😛

Agreed--it's for data center use exclusively. Optane may well boot an AMD system as fast as an SSD, but price at that level is far superior in favor of the SSD, imo. Yes, it is definitely a temporary product. Still amusing, in its way. It screams of Intel under-engineering while over-pricing.

You have it backwards, Micron bought out Intel's portion of the JV with Intel retaining all the rights to technology from gen 1 of 3D Xpoint but any subsequent generation will require Intel to license the technology. More likely than not, the reason the price is so high is that there is only 1 fab in the entire world that can make 3D Xpoint and until that comes up to full production, there will be a supply shortage and retailers will try to charge whatever they can. Micron said they will release their own 3D Xpoint products later this year or early next year.
