Why ? haven't they just made a bios update that allows a normal 13900k to hit 6 ghz

Since Silicon Lottery closed shop, Intel decided to take over apparently. 😛

Probably has higher quality memory controller to go with higher rated P and E dies, if you look at 500 or so chips Igor speed checked using ASUS SP rating most fall within 100 or so rating. These probably 110 on all 3 or thereabouts, so IMC 110, P 110, and E 110, sure people will be checking what silicon prediction scores are.

Why settle for 600€ per CPU when you can sell the binned ones for 900€. A regular 13900k would maybe need too much voltage and power to reach 6GHz, the specs of the KS are higher in power used and the 12 gen had a different max temp too. A simple bios profile for 6ghz would cause trouble for some motherboards and coolers and maybe also the warranty for the persons something like that matters. 200Mhz extra on light load is not going to change much anyway.

Still not as absurd as the QX9775. We still have a lot of wiggle room.

I have now. It went from 45Watt 5.5ghz to 60-65Watt at 6.0ghz with one core loaded only, that is ridiculously bad scaling. You can almost run 3 cores at 5.5ghz for much higher performance and the same power as 2 cores at 6.0ghz. 2 cores at 6.0ghz pulls around the same power as a stock Ryzen 5800x3d with those settings.
