Denial:

Because they can't go backwards
They just went backwards with 22nm, so....technically they can?

Yeah, someone already posted this.. I think it was pretty obvious I was speaking of performance but maybe not. 10nm clearly can't hit the desired target frequencies yet and that's why this is shipping on 14nm and not 10nm - they can't launch their 10 core flagship product and it caps out at ~4ghz and not 5 like last years model on essentially the same architecture.

Even regarding performance, they can still go forward with 10nm. Ice Lake has a much higher IPC so even with a lower clock they might be able to achieve similar or better performance. Would Intel fanboys overlook a better-performing product because it can't hit 5 GHz?

I don't think IceLake with all the mitigations in hardware has a large IPC gain. IceLake was slated for 15% IPC increase but I doubt they will hit that with all the other mitigations they have had to bake in. Frankly I bet AMD's Zen3 will be better than IceLake by a small margin. I also suspect TSMC's 7nm+ to get AMD to close to 5Ghz next round. Intel is going to have a real battle in 2020. With all that said im certain when INtel rights that massive ship they will bring the pain on many fronts.

I agree. Intel needs to do this shrinkage because it will help them big time in the long run especially in the mobile market with gaming laptops.

While I generally hope you are right, with a release date at the end of 2020, AMD is not battling much. They have laid down their cards, the 3950 is coming in January to stores (afaik), but that's about it. Sadly. Intel has it's 2021 lineup to prepare and go up against Ryzen 4000 processors...
