Lets not forget that it was reported HP were also using their printer and ink head combo to collect data on what you were printing and sell it on. Could this be the reason that HP want their own cartridges used as they cannot do this when you use third party inks? Just a thought.

Makes me wonder if just taking an official ink cartridge and drilling a little hole in it and refilling it then sealing the hole with a little plug would work.

It won't, because it has a chip that counts every little drop of ink. Once the chip "knows" it's empty, it refuses to continue to work, despite the cartridge being full with ink.
These printer companies are plain evil.

I'm sure that "the machine" the band "Rage against the machine" was talking about, was a printer. 😀

Sadly, I see no real news value in here, since HP has been doing shady stuff like this for at least 20 years now, I expect them to work against the customers in any way that's beyond buying overpriced printer cartridges.
Luckily, paper work at home becomes less and less important, and at work, I don't have to deal with it. But HP, one of the first companies I ever noticed is actively anti-consumer, and one of the first in the PC realm too.

What would be a good brand to switch to if i want to stick to third party cartridges?

Got an old 845c, uses 3rd party cartridges fine. 😛

I've long stopped buying HP products. As well as any printer that uses ink cartridges. They are all scam products and HP is the mafia of the printer business.

The only rational thing is to boycott their products and buy brands that allow third party cartridges, or better cheaper original ones.
I have nothing against buying original products, in truth, I always try to get the genuine replacement parts. Lower the price and get more volume of sales and customer's loyalty.

I gave up on HP years ago, they used to be the best printers on the market, then the software/firmware went to pot, now this, I bought an Epson with the refillable tank, about 2 yrs ago, and i still havent used the ink in the printer, and still have a free stock they gave me, and its been pretty faultless, All HP products are a waste of money now

I'd say this is not legal in the EU.
Let's see what they have to say.
Either way, I went Brother some time ago and... although their machines are not "the best", they aren't as problematic with third party cartridges.

HP is possibly the most egregious whitelister in the computer biz. If you think it's bad that even a budget printer won't work with 3rd party cartridges, imagine how crap it is when you've got a server that won't accept 3rd party hard drives. RAID configuration gone bad? Better hope you've got HP drives on-hand or else your downtime will go from minutes to days.
HP has also pretty much single-handedly kept the Intel Itanium architecture alive. What better way to lock in your customers than to have a platform that is binary incompatible with everything else?
HP's pricing for new products is usually pretty competitive, but that's because they try to lock you in.
HP is decent for budget laptops. That's about it though.
