It's funny how "getting a new OS" is not on some people's list of "reasons why people upgraded to Win10". Most people don't use any of the "spying" stuff anyway and it's an overall better OS than Win 7. If you're so worried about being spied on you can restrict all the data being sent in/out via a hardware firewall and various other system choices. But at that point you might start to ask yourself if running 3Dmark for points is worth running Windows and just roll back to 15 year old hardware that uses half the power of today and has stable drivers on Linux and allows you to play any Linux title just fine.

Half the people worried about spying are using Intel processors with ME built into it which has full access to all their data regardless of the OS and can send/receive over a network even when the computer is turned off. It's never been audited by a third party and essentially just a Intel designed blackbox. They care because it's a big deal in the media but in reality they probably haven't spent more than three minutes researching their privacy. I personally find Windows 10 fine for my everyday tasks/gaming. If I wanted to be private, I'd get a pre-2007 CPU machine and install tails on it or something.

The Anniversary Update breaks Logitech Webcam Software, so if you use that a lot you may want to wait a bit until there's a fix.

I just applied the update today and no Cortana enabled or anything like that so I am thinking that once you Disabled Cortana that its grandfathered in to stay disabled until you enable it yourself in order for the changes to happen. Also I like how they redid the start-menu adding to the start menu the logout feature for those who share a computer with multiple profiles.

I've been running 10 since 10/1/14 in a dual boot with 8, and running Win10 exclusively since 3/15--and it's by far the best OS they've done (as it should be since millions of people have been beta testing it since 10/1/14.) People crack me up as they'll cheerfully spend hundreds of dollars on a GPU they'll keep for a year or maybe two--but won't spend a dime on an OS that actually turns their computer into something more than a doorstop...;) (They think the OS is the least valuable component when in fact it's the most important as it is what supports whatever GPUs and games one wishes to run.) All the spyware silliness has been hilarious to watch...;) I guess people think that their country's national security depends on no one except the banks and the restaurant finding out about that pizza they ordered over the weekend...;) It's surprising that more people don't throw a pinch of salt over their shoulder when they sit down to use a computer...!

+1  On top of this these people tend not to have an issue sharing their entire existence on a smart phone and on Social Networks. Windows 10 is an awesome OS. I use Win 10 Pro x64 personally on every PC and laptop in my home, and also have deployed W10 Ent x64 across my entire organisation, along with Office 2016. Never been happier with Microsoft.

Yea, noticed that in his post after replying, didn't think it had been in public beta for that long

You may live in blissfull ignorance but that's what they want - millions of people just like you to let them away with it and eventually vote your entire freedom away... in case you are wondering what all this has to do with Windows 10 telemetry recording (and the backported to Windows 7 telemetry features)... they use data collected from MS also... NSA Mass Surveillance has already been used for ordinary police work ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://falkvinge.net/2013/11/24/nsa-mass-surveillance-has-already-been-used-for-ordinary-police-work/ ------BEGIN------ The NSA has used its ubiquitous wiretapping for ordinary police work. It used mass surveillance to prevent the murder of an eccentric artist, according to the New York Times. This means that the final line has been crossed; once mass surveillance of ordinary people is used for everyday police work, we are past the event horizon to a surveillance dystopia. In an article outlining the vast capabilities of the NSA, the New York Times drops this tidbit: The spy agency’s station in Texas intercepted 478 emails while helping to foil a jihadist plot to kill a Swedish artist who had drawn pictures of the Prophet Muhammad. However, the New York Times fails to elaborate on the immense importance of this fact. This means that the NSA went far, far beyond its mandate of “national security”, and used its mass surveillance – ubiquitous wiretapping, really – for ordinary police work. The Swedish artist in question is Lars Vilks, known for making outlandish art statements like putting images of the prophet Muhammed on crude dog sculptures in everyday traffic roundabouts. (It’s particularly unclear how the islamic prophet’s likeness was created, as he is traditionally imaged faceless.) While preventing the murder of a highly eccentric artist may be admirable in its own right, it does not nearly qualify for national security concerns, nor for preventing terrorism. So why is this important? It’s important because it crosses the line we were promised would never, ever, be crossed – that the ubiquitous wiretapping would only be used for national security, and never for ordinary police work against citizens. Once that line is crossed, the wiretapping is used against the country’s own citizens. For once you have prevented a murder, it’s easy to justify that you should be able to use the ubiquitous wiretapping to also prevent, say, rape and aggravated assault. No policymaker will protest that. Once you are preventing serious violent crimes, it’s easy to justify that the NSA and the Police should use the ubiquitous wiretapping to prevent all violent crimes. People who protest that in the name of civil liberties will be shot down; “it’s a fundamental civil liberty to not be a victim of a violent crime”. And so, surveillance will be Newspeaked into civil liberties in televised debates by Big Brother hawks. Once the wiretapping is preventing all violent crime, it will be repurposed to prevent all prison-time crime (described as “serious crime”), and from there, to prevent all crime. And those who speak up against this will be accused of “siding with criminals”. I have seen each of these steps happen in the past decade in various stages of policymaking. Yes, I’m presenting a slippery slope argument, but these steps are typically just 3-4 years apart, and I’m speaking from first-hand experience with this development. Then, once you have the ability to enforce all laws, out come the moral laws – typically first banning all kinds of sex that aren’t intended for reproduction, then everyday drugs, life-saving pharmaceuticals, and anything else that the regime du jour considers immoral for whatever reason. The crucial line to never be crossed is that wiretapping of private communications must never be used for ordinary police work against people who aren’t under formal, individual, and prior suspicion of an identified and already-committed crime. And that line has now been crossed. This means that we can unfortunately predict that the United States will take a very dark turn toward purebred fascism for a couple of decades, until it collapses under its own weight. We are now past the event horizon for that development. The focus must now lie on isolating this development to the United States to prevent contagion to the rest of the world.

Surprised no one mentioned the fact that this update will make it impossible to disable Cortana which will track and send all of our information directly to Microsoft(cough). You guys completely cool with that?
You can kill cortana by using AntiBeacon will turn cortana into local search

@ geogan Aware of how paranoid this message comes across? Own a cell phone? Just posting this paranoia has already given Google tons of information without doing anything but connecting to the internet. Only way to prevent getting data mined is to get completely off the grid. Build your house as a giant Faraday Cage. Then insulate the house so that thermal imaging does not work. Do not have any kind of government issued id. Deal only in cash. How you get the cash will be interesting...cannot have a formal job. Only can hold handyman jobs. Do not forget, second one steps outside, Google has use of satellites that can track movement. Hermit time. Do not need to defend Microsoft. They are a baby at this game. Data mining was around way before the birth of the internet. All it took was the will and a canceled check.

Update went smooth for me, but now my poor 128gb ssd (os drive) has now accumulated an extra 16gb of old windows files I don't need and no longer have permissions to delete. So while I like it a lot, I'll be doing a clean install this evening.

Remember Microsoft are the operating system and can easily get around software settings for firewall and they don't even use the hosts file for their own servers either since they realised people were overriding their machines with dummy settings. So their spyware will and does still continue to phone home with your latest information.
That's why you use a hardware firewall. Windows has zero control over a hardware firewall.

Probably in March/April with Redstone 2
The new shader compiler will be available as a standalone component of Windows SDK, not as a part of the Windows 10 ecosystem itself. The new shader intermediate language will also allow developers to create their own compiler with their own personal implementation, even their own shader language (without backing directly on HLSL).
