Uh, I'm a programmer and I don't see the point of this. It looks like a horrible keyboard missing important keys.

it isn't news... those kb are well known all over the world.
To have "played" with one when i was working in industrial stuff:
it is very very comfortable kb nearly all "important key" are in combinated key, after few min you type on it like on a kb with no numerical pad and you save lot of place while having "normal sized" key (i hate the low cost small key kb from china).
on "not cool" things: it exist only in US layout and it is not distributed in Andorra (sadly were i am 90% of the time), Spain nor France... Cherry kb haven't have those "not cool" issues.

for a programer/coder, most of your time is typing code rather than using macro no?
sorry but hhkb been here for long long time and there many fans on it
also most high-end keyboard such this hhkb or topre and other else usually if not always, use low-profile (aka basic keyboard)
as for typist consistency and reliability in keyboard is the important things compared to asethetic, but again asethethic is matter of personal preference, many said simple is the best
the compact design also not removing "important-keys", it rather combine function in keys, by making it compact you dont need to move your wrist while typing and this reduce strain on your hand

I came here to say the same thing. This keyboard would drive me insane. When writing code, I get aggravated at the missing keys on the average laptop, which has more keys than this.

This keyboard has had a cult following for years - way before the whole "omgcherryswitch" craze of 2013. I've used Topre switch keyboards before - I definitely liked it better than a cherry but I don't think they are worth the $100+ premium companies charge for them. A lot of people swear by this keyboard, I personally don't get it - but I also don't get a lot of things people find value in.

Though I never tried these keyboard, I do relate to what you said. I never really understood the obsession over mechanical switches in general. Yeah, they're definitely better, but I wouldn't buy another [new] mechanical keyboard again. Perhaps I'd enjoy something like the Cherry MX blue switches more than the brown of my current keyboard (for typing, anyway), but I'd rather just buy some early 1990s IBM mechanical keyboard off ebay.

How is this an efficient keyboard for programmers, it has no numpad, or do programmers not need to use strings of digits ever?!

put finger on "shift" and use the key 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0...
99% of the keyboard used in industrial rack don't have num pad... (also if you are old enough it's like on MSX or C64 🙂 )

My keyboard doesn't have LEDs and is not programmable nor does it have any extra keys. It's a standard 104-key mechanical keyboard. No bling.
This thing... No arrow keys? No dedicated function keys? No ins/home/pgup key group? I don't know. It looks completely unusable to me 😛
On the other hand, my hands are kind of huge. So maybe this helps people with human-sized hands :P

Errrr....yes....I do know how to use a keyboard thanks! 🙂 Numpad is more efficient & quicker than using shift + the top row keys - at least when inputting strings of figures. (Talking as a touch typist).

There is no reason for a keyboard to cost this much, no matter the brand.
No programmer is gonna spend that much on a simple kb. If you want a minimalistic kb, just buy a noppoo choc mini, or something similar. Sounds to me more like a kb for the "bling-bling" community of consumers with "hacker" added to the name.

I never realized all those keys were keeping people from being productive. Seems like you'd need a 2nd keyboard around anyways since some programs really want F-keys, arrows and such. Looks like people are paying $300 so they can change the angle slightly. To each their own.
As mentioned, I too have bought my first and last mechanical keyboard. Other than being incredibly loud and more expensive, to me, it isn't really any more impressive than the gaming boards I've used over the years.

I have got somewhere at home old IBM mechanical keyboard which I still use sometimes,another one is which I love to use is Topre which bought me my brother in Japan last time and this keyboard I use most of my time
Ducky keyboard which I own is great, but for some task I prefer use Topre or IBM
