Hi Hilbert, i have a question regarding the boost? Some sites, and users, are reporting that the the gpu only works (boosts) properly when the card is cold and that after 15 minutes or more, the card starts to trottle heavily and the boost almost disappears, becoming meaningless. Some sites are even starting to warn up cards for 30 minutes and then do the tests to make sure the boost doesn´t influence the results wrongly. And a few are starting to suggest (indirectly) that the boost is only intended to "cheat" on benchmarks, so the cards results are higher than they should. My question is if you have found any evidence that confirms or contradicts this issue??? Thanks!
Hilbert already answered but the throttling issue only occurred on the FE cards. None of the AIB cards have shown that behavior. On the FE you could fix it by manually adjusting the fan profile, something Nvidia should have done from the start. The last driver fixed fan issues but I haven't seen or heard of anyone retesting to see if it also updated the curve to alleviate throttling.
Also and let me add this, you need to keep things in perspective. If the card did reach a thermal limit and adapts by downclocking 50 MHz on the boost clock ... honestly you are not going to notice it in performance. You need more orders of magnitude for that say 100~150 MHz would result into maybe a 2 FPS lower framerate on a 60 FPS average.
I agree but to be fair some sites showed a ~200mhz drop over a period of time in some games: http://media.bestofmicro.com/W/3/581763/gallery/01-Clock-Rate_w_600.png I doubt every card/game would see this issue but it's kind of unacceptable, especially given that it's occurring on the most expensive variant of the 1080 and one that Nvidia spent a few hours talking about how well it's engineered. And yet despite claiming billions of dollars of engineering they didn't bother optimizing the fan profile.

Okay, good to know that everything is working as it should. Thanks for the quick reply, Hilbert!

Yeah, I feel your pain. Most expensive indeed but in this case the extra dollars equals a very slight improved quality. A reference card is still just a reference card and cannot keep the card below 80 Celsius, and it seems pascal isn't happy with that number because that's where the problems start. It does seem that they improved the cooler slightly though, previous reference cards reached close to 90 under severe stress, and it's not that 16nm is cooler, because then the custom cards would've achieved temps of 65 under

Just. Need. To. Hold. On. A bit longer...
Plz... why would u even upgrade, u have a 980 Ti 😛 I'm going to wait till August/September. Chances are prices will drop a small margin and availability will increase.

We need to see how it is compare to 970s on SLI and ofc 1080 (G1) on SLI. I hope to be able to do that HH.

yeah speed is about the same on both cards, but MSI has more efficient cooler. MSI GAMING X = 70C 39dBA Gigabyte G1 GAMING = 72C 41dBA
You can't really say that because it might just be the case that the MSI product that HH tested just may of been a slightly higher ASIC card. Even with 2x G1's there might be a small difference in the GPU quality. You'd have to test hundreds of G1's and same amount of the MSI cards to make any clear decision. I know this for a fact because both myself and a best friend got 980 G1's and his is no where near as good as the one i received. His only over clocks to 1500mhz stable while mine will run @ 1600Mhz all day. His card idles @ 34C and hits 66C while gaming mine idles @ 30C and 62C gaming while both of us have 22C room temps. His card boosts to the box numbers 1329 while mine does 1380 on default settings. My card is 75 ASIC while his is 72. See how that makes such a difference. We all here are the type of people whom become upset if we get a great card that just doesn't perform as well as others do. In this regard unfortunately it's a lotto still but only to a small percentage of enthusiasts who really care. Only after a certain amount of new GPUs have been validated through GPU-Z can you see how good the card you have is. Mine scores in the top 20% of all 980's and i'm happy with this. Your card's ASIC Quality is higher than 79.8% of similar GPU's in our validation database.

Strix looks awesome. Needs to be in the next Transformers film. Ideal product placement.

You can repeat yourself over and over again, but we report what we measure and thus in fact is the TDP. All manufacturers will follow the Nvidia spec and say it's 180 Watts. But what we measure is in our view the actual TDP as listed in the chart. Overall we see 190'ish Watt under load on the 1080'ies.
Thanks, so nvidia does not allow other OEMs to up the TDP limit.

Unfortunatelly this card has only 1x8pin,good for reference card or a stable card. Unfortunately the boost or the OC its not stable, fluctuate too much.because of Boost 3.0? No high TDP because will be too much heat and ofc too much downclock.

Thanks Hilbert! Any word on the Xtreme Gaming? Can't wait to put my hands on one of those... Would be great to see a review soon. 🙂

Nope they wont because they cost 50% more than GTX970 outside USA. 1070 with 500Euro MSRP have zero chances be same hit like GTX970 was.
I'm pretty sure those prices will plummet once AMD starts to gain traction with the RX480. You can find 1070's for £360 in the UK right now but for a nice one it's 400+ pounds. Hopefully that will drop to around 300 once AMD starts knocking out great bang for buck cards but i agree with you that 1070's price right now is just playing into AMDs hands.

Looking good from the review. Hopefully Amazon ships mine out this week (as their CS told me).... 🤓

Pascal is really impressive. Can't wait to see the ti and Big Pascal versions later this year. That might get me off my 980ti.

No, it's not that black and white. Pricing characteristics have been fairly similar with 970, in the first three to four weeks after launch it actually bumped to 450 EURO, then in the months following leveled at 350~375 EURO and now can be spotted at 300 EURO. Question versus demand, give it some time and prices will go down IF there is enough volume available, that however is the big question marker. Also IF AMD can out a competitive enough RX 480 product at 250 EURO, that will have an effect on 1070 pricing.

I partly agree. it is definitely not black and white. Here GTX 1070 FE costs just a bit more than GTX 980. That's clear win for GTX 1070. Custom editions cost bit more, but they deliver bit more, so it is OK too. Only bad apple is one with hybrid cooling, that costs 20% more than FE. But Headd is right that GTX 1070 can't be same sales maker as GTX 970. That's caused by pricing. GTX 1070 FE (cheapest 1070) costs 70% more than GTX 970. In other words it is way out of affordable price point for masses which were addressed by GTX 970 price. Interesting thing here is upcoming market state. GTX 1070 delivers very good performance per $ in comparison to most of cards around. (Maybe discounted Fury - non X/Nano can attract few people, but that would be rare.) GTX 1080 delivers better performance per $ too, not much, but does. Then RX-480 if anywhere close to promised performance will have even more brutal effect on purchase decisions. In a month, there would be no reason to buy other card than RX-480, GTX 1070 or GTX 1080. And everything above or below from last generation will be generally bad buy unless discounted accordingly. I wonder if AMD or nVidia manage to get those sub RX-480 GPUs out for next month. Or if there will be GPU between RX-480 and GTX 1070. But currently it looks like there will be huge vacuum in certain price ranges. And people will have to make decision to either go for RX-480 which takes over GTX 970 price point or GTX 1070 which is painfully above spending budget for masses.

Thats not true.I buy GTX970 day1 after launch for 9400czk(330USD) and it was gigabyte G1 gaming.. 1070 cheapest(FE edition) cost 13800czk(475USD) up to 16000czk(ASUS strix) But i agree with AMD rx 480.But that dont change fact 1070 will not be hit if it will cost this insane money outside USA.

Had problems with the fans on my G1 970 think i'll be trying the msi gaming x this time. If i dont skip this gen all together.

It would have been nice to see some impressions of triple screen gaming and the new multi-camera feature SMP. Or isn't this available yet in drivers?

Justbordered onenof these awesome looking cards. My last few cards ( 980, 780 ) have been reference cards. But when you can get a custom card with higher clocks for $50 less than the founders edition, I had to grab one.
