Is it just me or does something not add up with Vegas performance.

I've been thinking about this since the release. The thermals are quite OK, even for the reference model, so I have no idea where those 300W+ go. Btw.: New here, hi all 🙂.

Raising the voltage limitations and power threshold probably helps nicely, guessing that's good for third party GPU models whenever those actually come out. 🙂 (Availability on the stock models are already pretty poor though, these are probably going to be even worse so yay? )

I think that AMD could be "afraid" that unlocking this extra performance could kill the card early, so they unlock it only on the best batches. Edit: welcome Vananovion 🙂

Yeah read this two days ago and shared it in the Vega thread. Still, free performance with a vBIOS flash usually has it's fans and applications 😉

I've got my Fury still after 3 solid years, runs cool and quiet thanks to the aftermarket cooler. Runs happily at stock clocks but undervolted and with a -40% power setting, so draws about 165W or so. I'd rather be on the lower end of power consumption with good performance than a bit more oomph at the cost of huge power draw.

Wonder if it has anything to do with HBM clock.

Actually it partially does, follow the link I posted in the Vega thread (quoted above for convenience), it boosts both core clocks as well as HBM clock, at least as far as I've read. (Or follow the post of videocardz that Hilbert linked in the OP)

AMD GPU's are known to age well ("Fine Wine" technology"). We could see an improvement in Vega performance in the upcoming months, we've had plenty of past examples of it happening over the lifespan of their products. That said, Vega is not going to get near the 1080Ti. There are allot of new features inside the chip and technically it has the raw power, but it's not translating into real world numbers. Maybe it's a case like Ryzen on Tomb Raider: after game patches the gap to Intel has shortened significantly.

I do prefer this strategy too, leaving overclocking to when I want to postpone a upgrade a few more months.

I was reading this as if people were flashing the 56 BIOS on to the 64. Really confused me lol. The use of "into" really got me.
