I have a RT-AX86U. Looks like I'm safe!

Would have been nice if they told us how to see if you have an infection. I'm on the latest firmware for my router and have been for quite a while, so I'm assuming that my router is safe. But how can I be sure?

There probably is no way to have the router tell you if it is infected. The router's OS is rudimentary at best. The only 100% way of knowing your router is not infected is to factory default it and wipe the logs. Backing up your configuration first is the smart way of doing it but they have not told us if the infection can code itself into the backup; I backed mine up when I first installed it and other than firmware and definition updates nothing has changed so my backup up configuration is clean. That will have to be a call for each individual to make.

How many of those are still on the initial FW ? 30, 50, 75% ?? For Geeks this is no Problem once you know about it, but what about the rest ? OK, they don't even know they have an issue, but that doesn't fix it. Routers in general need to be looked at again, the way this works for the vast mayority of users is a risc for everybody. I have done my fair share of House Calls fixing somebodies DSL, Cable or whatever Setup they had. Most customers where absolut clueless how this works and need to pay somebody to do it, That is exactly how this Asus thing will also be treated. Flash a a few and fight the rest when they attack you in a Botnet.
