I think you have misunderstood the process here 😉
No. Is this thread different to original i7-4790K??

The processor doesn't come stock at 5Ghz. The company tests a bunch of processors to make sure they can hit 5Ghz and then sells them for more money. You have to get them to 5Ghz yourself.

Great review as usual and very interesting read. Very good idea to personally bin CPUs and sell the overclock for extra cash. We would all of course love an i7 quad flagship @ 5ghz for our gaming or working computers. I very much doubt though that you would see any difference between say 4.8 and 5.0 while gaming. Although i absolutely love raw power i also love paying my electric bill (not). So even if i got a CPU like this then i still wouldn't put it under that amount of torture for 24/7 use. This does mean though usually that this chip will run smooth as a peach @ stock with amazingly low temps and power draw. (not always but mostly)

Very nice to know about that site. A 5960X at guaranteed 4,5 GHz ist just the medicine I need.

the increase in wattage in power load from defualt to 5ghz is huge 124 watt vs 234 watt @ 5ghz Still want one these chips, But i need mobo that is DDR4 and not a extreme edition mobo to go with it. that or what ever cpu they release to be successor to the i7 4790k ( a cpu with atlest 4ghz base clock)

Finally a proper store for folks who demand cherry picked CPU's! They should consider adding a GPU Silicon Lottery section to the site also.

Maby it will catch on and smaller companies like Intel will start selling them like this ><

I bought a 4790K when they came out to replace a 3770K in my main rig. Personally I see no difference in overclocking potential from the 4770K, however the load temps may be lower with the new Devils Canyon. Overclocking my particular cpu was extremely easy to 4.6ghz. All I did was change the multiplier to 46, left everything at Auto and voila stable 4.6ghz 24/7. The Asus Hero Vll sets vcore at 1.3v (which is probably a little high), but temps are around 64C full load with my watercooling. Try as I might I am not able to push the cpu any further than 4.6ghz. I appear to have hit a wall, even with cpu vcore at 1.45ghz I am not able to run benchmarks at 4.7ghz. I'm not complaining at 4.6ghz, but surprised that for me I am not able to squeeze even a little more out of this particular cpu.

got a 4790k two days ago . I was able to reach 4.8 1.3v and 4.9 1.34v so far ...not bad !!

I have a 2600K at 4.6. What king of comparative increase would i have going to a 4790K?
Not much, unless you own software that's optimized for AVX2.

Not much but benchmarkwise 4.6GHz is equivalent to maybe a 4790K @4.2GHz. So think a Haswell chip being 400-500MHz under Sandy clocks. So a 4.5GHz will be sorta like having a Sandy at 4.9-5.0GHz. Voltage, heat output Haswell technically produces less unless you have one with bad contact.. like mine where it was really horrible and at stress (regardless if it was avx or non) gave me +20C, after delid it was much better. Runs cool, idles well like 800MHz (vs. 1600MHz) and low voltage, you jump platforms so P67/Z68/Z77 -> Z87/Z97, you get better memory controller, native pcie 3.0/native usb 3.0 (or more of), onboard sound improved (if thats to your liking), SSD/M2 support and so forth. So while its not a "needed" upgrade its definitely a good one but with timing most people may want to wait till whatever comes during the summer time, but if you find a good deal, its not a bad one to pass up either as these chips will last you a few more years just like the 2500K/2600K chips lasted you this long.

a 2600k is more than enough for gaming and pretty much everything else...the next significant leap will be skylake , probably 1 - 1\2 year from now . btw: i was able to reach 5.0 with my 4790k but it isn't stable enough for 3dmark...0 bsod though

I'm curious with anyone who purchases these cpu @ 5 GHZ... how high can you OC stable if you disable 1 or 2 cores? The reason I ask is that most games are not well multithreaded so would a 5.5 or 6 GHZ dual core run BETTER than 5 GHZ quad core? Its easy to disable in the bios and test.

My 4690k can boot at 5Ghz, but crashes in Prime95 in about 4 seconds lol I didn't bother going above 1.3v however, I've got adequate cooling tho so might try 1.35v at some point.

If you disabled two cores on a 5Ghz 4790K, you'd maybe get 5.1Ghz at the most. These chips hit the wall hard.
