It's surprised me Intel have gone down the same route as IB with the thermal paste. How long 'til we see a delidded Haswell?

Cracking review. Intel I am disappoint.
I thought at the least it would be 5% faster than Ivy Bridge and use solder rather than cheap thermal paste so it could get a heavy OC. To me stock performance never matters, only the OC performance... but it looks like that won't even really outdo IB at all. This really pisses me off, I'm sitting on a Nehalem/Bloomfield chip, I was hoping this thing would get a small IPC boost and OC easily beyond 5GHz on one of those crappy self-contained water coolers. Now what do I do, it's the same crap as IB and just 1 year before changes such as DDR4. You know what would have been nice? If there was competition so I could buy from another company! :bang:

**** it, I'll just get an Intel 335 SSD and call it a day.

think I will go ssd shopping myself too

:S Now this is a let down, i expected more from that fancy architecture, i've looked around a bit and i have mixed feelings, the worst part has to be this, which i kinda hoped it won't be true. http://i.imgur.com/VSjS7Y0.png
Haswell-based desktop and overclocker-friendly CPUs are not energy-efficient at all. As a result, Haswell’s overall overclocking potential doesn’t inspire much optimism at all. In other words, another iteration in Intel’s microarchitecture is in fact a step back in terms of frequency potential, even though Intel did everything possible to compensate for it by adding extra overclocking-friendly features into their new processors.
But it can shine at some more poorly coded games, stock vs stock Skyrim @ 1080P 3770k 75fps 4770k 84fps -------- Bf3 @ 1080P Ultra 3770k 68fps 4770k 71fps http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=k8-bCwcZqDo#t=321s or up to 70fps difference at lower reso, for example Dirt3, ~ 25fps in DeusEx HR, Skyrim ~ 22fps, ~ 10fsp in F1 2012, ~6fps in Metro LL, Hitman Absolution ~5fps difference http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-4770k_8.html#sect0 http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/61451-intel-haswell-i7-4770k-i5-4670k-review-15.html
We should add that while we achieved 4.7GHz, overclocking is never a guarantee. In fact other people we've spoken to have achieved far less so not only will heat prevent you running at 4.7GHz 24/7, you'll likely struggle to get there anyway from the odds we've heard, at least with early engineering test samples anyway.

So it's not even faster than a 3770 out of the box. With new Revs of mobos maybe you get 5-10% increase.

If this is an engineering sample is there going to be a quick review of a retail chip or an update to this review... assuming there is any difference at all?

You know, why couldn't they separate the lineup a bit further. K chips should be soldered at least, then the price difference could actually be justified. I'm disappointed by this release but then again, now I don't have to upgrade  Well, a pair of 770s is tempting...

your better off buying a single 780 and sli that down the road

Look one post above, yes it is by games, up to 5-15fps on avg faster clock vs clock, depending on the game and reso/gpu.

Yeah looks like almost all review sites got a ES.. Hope that bit-tech quote is true

Nice and thorough review, thanks. Sadly, gives me no reason to upgrade. This 2500K will easily be the processor I've used for the longest in my main machine, almost 2.5 years now, it should make it to near 4 years if it doesnt die :P

Still no reason for me to upgrade either :P

@TJ, will you be getting the 4770K or 3770K?

What an odd situation. There's really no performance advantage to speak of and Intel decided in all its wisdom to make it just as hot as the 3770K. Weren't the K series intended to keep gamers happy? *scratches head*

Looking at my current setup, should I upgrade to Haswell with 16 gig of ram or wait?(For what?). My 930 is Oc'd to 4ghz but I really feel it is throttling my GTX690. If I buy Haswell, I will only really plan on upgrading again in 2015.

Well i was set for 4770K and Asus z87 deluxe, now Im a bit worried about those temps and OC potential.. Hopefully its just a ES thing, since all the sites that i looked got ES. Im still not 100% sure, but think i'll bite the bullet xD

Yeah well I wish I was as calm about it as you, it looks like it OCs less than Ivy Bridge. Maxwell didn't arrive, the 780 is robbery, AMD are sitting around doing nothing and Haswell is a flop. Great. So much for my 2013 upgrade plans.
