Isn't that a feature? I mean Microsoft do want people buying new computers all the time.
The Average
Microsoft on the Surface domain has the second to best support I have ever experienced. ( Dell still holds the crown for me.) So if your surface device has any kind of problem they just replace it with a new one. Totally free. So I don't see how they make money off of that. I won't say their products are the most reliable but the issues I have had were very very minor. Most times not even worth mentioning. Like the far right side of the kickstand magnet was not glued properly.
Microsoft even replaced my Surface Pro 1 with Surface Pro 3 when I messed with recovery partition and I couldn't refresh the device.

Microsoft return rates appear lower because they are constantly mismatching serial numbers and units and end up refusing the return because of their own dodgy behaviour/systems. Speaking as an Australian retailer and tech guy who deals with the faulty units on customers behalf. The surface is great concept but we do see a disproportionately high number of them back with problems compared to other Windows 10 devices.

My original Surface Pro 4 developed a problem with the screen a few weeks in. Couldn't find a way to fix it so I returned it at a Microsoft store. My replacement unit worked properly, and I haven't had an issue with it for the past two years. The earlier driver issues were a nightmare though.

I've got a Surface 2 (4 years old by now). The surface itself is still fine, BUT:
- Keyboard broke (most expensive bloody keyboard I ever bought)
- Adapter broke 2x
- The magnet of the surface pen stuck to the surface, while the pen did not... fortunately with putting the magnet part back in the pen being very careful with it, it survived until this day.
Especially the adapter is very poorly designed. The first one was replaced because MS acknowledged it's design flaw, but they forgot to fix the other half. Having learned I had to handle the adapter as though it's made of sugar, it still stopped working. The cable has a small kink in it..
I now use an el-cheapo third party adapter, which though not as "stylish", has actual decent cables....
Meanwhile, the adapter which came with my asus laptop from 2005, which is ugly, is still working like a charm (on another laptop, as the cat destroyed the newer one 😀)
