""Some people buy a batch, 'repair' it, and sell it domestically or export it to China," he added." I assume the term "repair it" is another way of saying that they rewrite the usage data statistics somehow ?

yes or do nothing and sell as "near new" to someone in a country that doesn't have commercial law with their country... (via ebay, amazon or alibaba as an exemple)

Seeing more stuff like this for sale on Ebay. 2 months old....hammered to all hell and no doubt no chance of any warranty from WD

Nothing wrong with mechanical harddrives, specially when they have only been used for 2 months, Servers usually hammer harddrives for years before failure, Its SSDs what im worried about, they must have got way over used very quick and the second hand market is gonna get flodded with them, making it hard to get new cheap SSDs without falling into used chips

"I am selling machinery that I purchased three months ago at a loss," “I have not been able to find buyers in the last three days.
This put a grin on my face, up until he mentioning mining other currencies. Anyway, I wouldn't mind buying an SSD used for mining if it was cheap enough and still has more than 50% life left. Drives that store games don't need to be written to all that often.

I presume "seller refurbished" (ebay link above) means they formatted it and wiped it down with a damp cloth. Though, to be fair, that would still be more than some refurbished items I've bought from the factory seem to have had.

In May, Chia's price doubled to $ 1,685 USD in a week. However, it began to decline shortly afterwards. Today, it is trading at $ 215, a loss of 87 percent.
Maybe I'll be able to buy HDDs for acceptable prices in a few months 😀. Is it unreasonable to think that I shouldn't have to pay two times or more what something used to cost 🙄?

this was extremely easy to predict, at least they pay the price

No idea what these people are doing, but the only way to "refurbish" drives like these for sale is to do a full wipe to one of the DoD specs (HDD) or secure erase/cryptographic erase (SSD). In the case of SSD, that's about it, with an HDD, you should run multiple passes of various diagnostic test. I used to do full surface tests and peformance tests to ensure if falls within spec for the drive - anything unexpected = something failing or about to fail. Any true "repair" of a broken drive where components get replaced is something you pay $1000s for and its done in a clean room by an expert. Half the reselling jerks on Amazon and Ebay just delete partitions or similar - testing nothing and leaving all the old data (if you know how to get it...). They are not refurbishing and they are certainly not repairing..

Excellent, the less people the better for me. I wont be selling anything. But seriously this article doesn't reflect the truth, Chia software shows the total size of the mainent, and it grows 35.6EiB right now

When will we have a news articles that goes ? "ETH/Bitcoin cryptocurrency miners are dumping their GPU's in droves as a result of the precipitous price reduction. As a result, they were forced to swallow losses and switch to ..."

This was the best news to happen in 2019 too. When it all crashed. RX480 were near $400, 2 weeks later, I bought 2 480 4gb nitros for $200 shipped together. Paid $180 for my Vega 56, now they are $600........... And I sold that to a friend for $150 with an AIO I put on it.

Tell me about it - I have 6TB of lost data sitting on a WD Purple (yes I know its surveillance drive!!) drive I can't afford to attempt to recover in one of those places (priced for rich companies only not personal users 😡). I even have an exact identical "donor" drive myself that could possibly be used for spare parts (drive head controllers or board controller chip).

The problem is that 60 days of usage via Chia mining, equates to years and years of normal usage i believe. So it's a risk i think. Still, when you can buy a 14TB elements drive for £350 (often) why would you buy a second hand drive anyway
