If not d'loaded from steam, does it work with the steam installation of HL? Also, does it work on Blue Shift, and Opposing Force?
Yes it works with your Steam installation but you don't use Steam to download the game. You can get it from a torrent or from just about any gaming website and its free. Here is the Black Mesa website you can get the game from. http://release.blackmesasource.com/ .

my memory of HL is hazy but I am certain they have changed and tweaked some of the level design.
Yeap, in fact it is worth exploring because they have changed some stuff so even if you know the layout by heart, you'll find it rewarding in a sense. I feel as if this one is a tiny bit harder and i liked it. There is even an achievement if you find a different route for a particular level.

So I need to reinstall HL2 to be able to download this mod through steam? Or can I download and install Black Mesa without having HL2 installed? I can see HL2 greyed out in my steam library because its not installed currently.

If you open Steam go to tools, you can download the 2007 Source SDK, that is all you need. Just FYI, the crowbar is not where it was originally in the first game. I ran around and around looking for it in the original location. I am currently at the beginning of the blast pit level.

I just finished up the tram and am at the rocket now. I really enjoyed the attention to detail in the starting area, they even remembered the little alarm button beneath the security guards desk before the game starts. I gotta say soldiers seem rougher than in HL-1. They really mess you up if you aren't careful.

I have been playing on hard difficulty and the soldiers are ridiculous. Their accuracy, reaction speed, and damage is incredibly high compared to the rest of the monsters. It takes many many deaths to get through groups of them.

Well, not exactly. They're still working on the last section of the game.

Your Crazy! But truthfully I never did either, I got up to a point in the game (a void type of area where you step on floating blocks...). I lost interest real fast as well i had other newer games that I wanted to play. When I eventually went to play it again a few years later I decided to try steam on 56k dial up, it instantly turned me off steam and anything valve had to offer and gave up before I started. I still feel the same way to this day about steam. But I'm almost tempted to give it another shot (without steam, since there is a no steam needed version floating around) . I still have my original retail disks of HL and OF add on

My problem was in PC gaming's hay day I tried to buy every new major release there was but then ended up playing the same multiplayer games like counter strike, unreal tournament, and now mmorpgs for hours on end. I have a stack of games years old I have never really tried. I've never had a cutting edge pc so at least by the time I get around to them I'll be able to max them all out like its nothing.

Yeah basically it's either booby traps or long range with the revolver. At PBR more than two can take you from full life to zero in no time.
