Not surprised, I have a lovely 3K i7 MSI laptop with a 970M and it's a joy to use. Not specifically a games laptop but slim, well made, very attractive & light. A SSD 256GB and a 1TB 7,200 rpm hard drive is a great combo and means you're never going to run out of storage. Dell used to offer you the chance to choose a 7,200 rpm hard drive, I have an older Dell with one but nowadays Dell don't offer you the opportunity to spec a laptop unless it's one of the expensive Alienware models (and they sure know how to charge for these!).

Gaming on a Laptop is still a thing? Never understood why one would spend triple the price of a Gaming PC.

Gaming laptop make sense, only when you are travelling.. its better than transporting pc case and 27 lcd in the bag..

After the itx form factor boom, gaming laptops make sense to bikers and commuters of local transport, i believe, but for others, a small itx gaming build is quite cheap and more powerful in comparison, esp for lan parties.

There is problem ITX cases with GPU support is expensive - there some Silverstone Raven case, which enable to make something like PS4 / Xbox one case, but is quite expensive. There not mobile MXM form factor GPU avalaible for such machine, MXM GPUs are OEM only, some as most of Intel CPU with good enough Iris GPU - its specific FCPGA modul, not board to that.. So possibility to build such machine is killed by main HW producers, they dont want you to give choice and build small modular machine / upgradable PC notebook / tablet / handheld.. They just want to milk you every 2 years and throw old device to junkyard (low performance not game users)

I never really was big into gaming laptops like many have said. I've had laptops in the past with APUs and low powered CPUs. It wasn't till I was on the go and sold off my desktop was when I switched to a laptop. MSI GT72 970M w/ 6820HK CPU, overclock that baby to 4GHz and you're hovering at a 6700K stock desktop performance. Last year I upgraded to another MSI, GT73VR 1070 w/ 6820HK again OC'd to 4.0GHz, love this thing, I have a desktop performer on the go. Currently living in Japan but when I went to visit socal I just took it with me, I even streamed on twitch while I was there, just put it in my backpack and go. Very convenient.. yeah the thing that still sucks is the pricing since you can usually get the same performance for half the price. I think I got my laptop last year and it was around $2,000... nonetheless I wish they would do LGA rather than BGA, they do have MXM which is nice but even upgrading your GPU costs more than half of the laptop. I will probably upgrade it one more time when the next gen 8-9K CPUs come out along with 20 series NVidia GPU. They do have LGA laptops (other OEMs) where you can use a desktop CPU and overclocks fairly well but like desktop.. you're stick with that tick/tock generation, so you'll still find yourself having to swap the entire thing if you choose to upgrade say to a 6 core down the line. On AMD's side they have a swappable CPU but their GPUs are soldered, where as regular Intel CPUs (BGA) are soldered and NVidia GPUs are swappable. Overall the cooling is actually pretty decent on these, sure it'll rev up but tweaking it or playing with headphones its tolerable. Granted I also stream on twitch with this laptop and surprisingly the sound is not as annoying as you would find with some streamers on a desktop. Laptops I've had: MSI GT72 Intel 6820HK 16GB DDR4 2133 NVidia 970M SSD + SSD 17.3" IPS 75Hz MSI GT73VR Intel 6820HK 16GB DDR4 2400 NVidia 1070 NVME + SSD + SDD 17.3" 120Hz I will eventually rebuild my desktop lol, but my current situation a laptop is best.
